Il legname si ottiene mediante segatura a raso o a quarto. Il legname segato a piano ritrae gli anelli di crescita degli alberi piatti sulla faccia più larga della tavola ed è tipicamente utilizzato come legname strutturale.

Il riftsawing viene utilizzato anche per i legni duri, con gli anelli di crescita in legno duro riftsawn allineati con un angolo da 30 a 60 gradi rispetto alla faccia larga della tavola e utilizzati dove l'aspetto e la durata sono essenziali.

Il legname deriva da tronchi che vengono raccolti, scortecciati e lavorati in lunghi pezzi con una sezione trasversale rettangolare. La trasformazione dei tronchi in legname prevede più fasi, a partire da una sega automatica che taglia il tronco in lastre. Queste lastre vengono quindi trasportate tramite un nastro trasportatore a seghe più piccole, dove vengono tagliate in pezzi squadrati di larghezze specifiche.

Inizialmente, le superfici di questi pezzi di legname sono ruvide e le loro dimensioni possono variare leggermente da un'estremità all'altra. Il metodo di taglio del legno influenza in modo significativo le caratteristiche e le applicazioni del legname. Il legname viene tagliato in tre modi: taglio piano, taglio a quarti o taglio a nervature.

Il legname tagliato piano presenta anelli di crescita quasi piatti lungo la faccia più larga della tavola ed è comunemente utilizzato in applicazioni strutturali grazie alla sua efficienza nella produzione e alla convenienza. Il legname tagliato a quarti, in cui gli anelli di crescita si allineano di circa 45 gradi nei legni teneri e di 60 gradi nei legni duri rispetto alla faccia più larga della tavola, è preferito per prodotti come pavimenti, finiture e rivestimenti per via della sua maggiore stabilità e aspetto. Il taglio a nervature, applicato principalmente ai legni duri, allinea gli anelli di crescita a un angolo di 30-60 gradi, ottimizzando l'aspetto estetico e la durata, rendendolo ideale per arredi di alta qualità e applicazioni decorative. Lumber is made from logs that are harvested, debarked, and processed into long pieces with a rectangular cross-section. The process starts when an automated saw slices a log into slabs. Those slabs then move on a conveyor belt to smaller saws, where they are cut into square-edged pieces of specific widths.

Freshly cut lumber usually has rough surfaces. Its dimensions may also vary slightly from one end to the other. The way wood is cut affects both the lumber’s appearance and how it is used.

Lumber is cut in three main ways: plainsawing, quartersawing, and riftsawing. Plainsawn lumber has growth rings that lie nearly flat on the board’s wider face. It is often used for structural applications because it is efficient to produce and cost-effective.

Quartersawn lumber places the growth rings at about 45 degrees in softwoods and 60 degrees in hardwoods to the wider face of the board. It is often chosen for flooring, trim, and siding because it is more stable and has a better appearance. Riftsawing is used mainly for hardwoods. It sets the growth rings at a 30 to 60-degree angle and is well suited for high-quality furnishings and decorative uses because it improves durability and visual appeal.
