Di solito, il legname è rivestito su quattro lati. Generalmente, i legni duri vengono rivestiti solo su due lati, lasciando che gli altri spigoli più ruvidi siano finalizzati dal falegname.
Il legno levigato deve presentare costantemente una planarità, mentre gli oggetti torniti devono mostrare una rotondità distinta e i bordi devono apparire sempre perfettamente dritti.
La levigatura è un altro metodo comune utilizzato per levigare le superfici in legno.
Si consiglia sempre di carteggiare nella direzione delle fibre del legno, iniziando con una grana più grossa e passando progressivamente a grane più fini per una finitura più liscia.

In questo processo si compensa il potenziale restringimento che avviene durante la fase di stagionatura aumentando marginalmente le dimensioni del legno prima del rivestimento. Aiuta anche a correggere alcune distorsioni che possono verificarsi durante l'essiccazione del legno.

L'attrezzatura utilizzata nel processo di rivestimento è una pialla dotata di lame rotanti. Questo strumento leviga efficacemente la superficie del legno e può arrotondare leggermente i bordi, migliorandone l'aspetto e la sicurezza durante la manipolazione. In genere, il legname viene rivestito su tutti e quattro i lati per garantire uniformità e planarità. Tuttavia, i legni duri vengono spesso rivestiti solo su due lati, lasciando i bordi grezzi e da rifinire dal falegname in base ai requisiti specifici del progetto.

La coerenza nel prodotto finito è fondamentale; il legno rivestito deve sempre presentare una superficie piana. Allo stesso modo, tutti gli oggetti in legno torniti devono presentare una netta rotondità e tutti i bordi devono essere perfettamente dritti. Un'altra tecnica comune per ottenere una finitura liscia è la levigatura, che prevede l'uso di grane progressivamente più fini. La levigatura deve essere sempre eseguita nella direzione delle fibre del legno per evitare di danneggiare la superficie e per garantire una finitura liscia.

Attraverso questi metodi, la superficie del legno assicura che i prodotti in legno non siano solo esteticamente gradevoli, ma soddisfino anche specifiche precise per progetti di costruzione e lavorazione del legno.

Wood surfacing smooths lumber, improves its size accuracy, and makes it safer to handle. It is a key finishing step in woodworking and construction. The process also helps correct small distortions that can form as wood dries.

Before surfacing, the wood may be sized slightly larger to account for shrinkage during seasoning, which is the drying stage. A plane, a tool with rotating blades, is used to remove material and smooth the surface. The same tool can also round the edges a little, which improves both appearance and safety.

Lumber is usually surfaced on all four sides so the piece is flat and uniform. Hardwoods are often surfaced on only two sides, leaving the remaining rough surfaces for the woodworker to finish as needed. For any surfaced piece, the finished result should be flat. Turned wooden objects should be clearly round, and edges should be straight.

Sanding is another way to create a smooth finish. It uses grit sizes that become finer step by step. Sanding should always follow the direction of the wood fibers to avoid damaging the surface and to leave a smoother result.
