Il tempo di presa del cemento è il tempo impiegato dalla pasta cementizia per passare da uno stato plastico a uno rigido e viene determinato utilizzando un apparecchio Vicat.
Inizialmente, l'acqua viene aggiunta al cemento e viene preparata una pasta della consistenza richiesta, che viene poi riempita nello stampo.
Un ago con un diametro di 0,04 pollici viene quindi calato nella pasta di cemento a intervalli di tempo regolari fino a quando non penetra a una distanza specificata dal fondo dello stampo. Il tempo impiegato dall'aggiunta di acqua a questa istanza fornisce il tempo di presa iniziale del cemento. 
Successivamente, un ago con attacco anulare viene calato nella pasta di cemento a intervalli di tempo specifici fino a quando l'attacco non riesce a lasciare un segno sulla superficie della pasta. Il tempo trascorso dall'aggiunta di acqua a questa istanza fornisce il tempo di presa finale del cemento.
Infine, secondo gli standard americani, il tempo di presa iniziale del cemento Portland non deve essere inferiore a 60 minuti e il tempo di presa finale non deve superare le dieci ore.

Il tempo di presa del cemento si riferisce al processo di passaggio della pasta di cemento da uno stato plastico a uno stato solido. Questo processo è fondamentale nell'edilizia in quanto determina i tempi di posa, compattazione e finitura del calcestruzzo. L'inizio di questa solidificazione è definito presa iniziale, indicando quando la pasta diventa inutilizzabile. La presa finale è quando la pasta si è solidificata completamente e ulteriori manipolazioni non possono più influenzarne la forma. La resistenza del cemento è minima in questa fase poiché l'idratazione del silicato tricalcico è appena iniziata.

Cement setting time describes how cement paste changes from a plastic state to a solid state. This change matters in construction because it sets the window for placing, compacting, and finishing concrete. The first stage is called the initial set. At that point, the paste becomes unworkable.

The next stage is the final set. By then, the paste has solidified completely, and further handling can no longer change its shape. Cement strength is still very low at this stage because hydration of tricalcium silicate has only just begun.

Initial and final setting times are usually measured with the Vicat apparatus. This device checks how much resistance a standardized cement paste gives to a needle. Cement can also show false set if it is stored in humid conditions. In this case, it stiffens within minutes after mixing but does not give off much heat.

A different problem is flash set. This can happen when not enough gypsum is added to ground Portland cement clinker. Then tricalcium hydration happens very quickly after water is added. The cement sets almost at once and releases heat rapidly.
