Design Example: Sustainability in Concrete Building

Un'impresa edile specializzata in edifici in calcestruzzo ha costruito un edificio commerciale sostenibile. 
Le varie pratiche sostenibili incorporate nell'edificio in cemento includono la fornitura di un'area di parcheggio in cemento sotto l'edificio per creare più aree aperte intorno ad esso.
Alcune porzioni delle aree aperte utilizzano blocchi di pavimentazione in calcestruzzo permeabile che consentono il deflusso dell'acqua piovana.
L'acqua piovana viene raccolta e immagazzinata in una cisterna sotterranea di cemento, da dove può essere riutilizzata, facilitando una costruzione efficiente dal punto di vista idrico.
L'utilizzo di calcestruzzo preconfezionato con materiali regionali e alcune porzioni di cemento di scoria, ceneri volanti e aggregati riciclati consente di risparmiare sui costi dei materiali.
L'incorporazione di rinforzi in acciaio riciclato contribuisce al recupero del materiale.
Pavimenti e soffitti sono realizzati in cemento a vista per ridurre al minimo l'uso di rivestimenti.
L'utilizzo di materiale di copertura in calcestruzzo con un alto indice di riflettanza solare e sistemi in calcestruzzo isolato riduce la domanda di sistemi di condizionamento dell'aria.
Infine, una piccola profondità dalla facciata dell'edificio al suo nucleo e ampi spazi privi di colonne massimizzano l'ingresso della luce naturale, aumentando l'efficienza energetica dell'edificio

Man mano che il settore edile si orienta verso pratiche più ecosostenibili, l'adattabilità del calcestruzzo e la sua capacità di incorporare caratteristiche sostenibili lo rendono un materiale fondamentale nella ricerca di soluzioni edilizie più ecologiche.


 Esistono molteplici approcci per raggiungere la sostenibilità in un edificio commerciale in cemento. Ad esempio, quando si costruisce un parcheggio in cemento sotto l'edificio, si possono utilizzare blocchi di pavimentazione permeabili in cemento in aree aperte, così da facilitare la raccolta dell'acqua piovana tramite una cisterna sotterranea. Quest'acqua può essere quindi riutilizzata per il giardinaggio, migliorando l'efficienza idrica. Inoltre, l'utilizzo di calcestruzzo preconfezionato realizzato con materiali regionali, cemento di scorie, ceneri volanti o aggregati riciclati riduce i costi dei materiali, così come i rinforzi in acciaio riciclato promuovono il recupero dei materiali.


 Per l'edificio stesso, l'uso di calcestruzzo a vista per pareti, pavimenti e soffitti riduce al minimo la necessità di vernici e rivestimenti, riducendo così le emissioni di Composti Organici Volatili (COV) e migliorando la qualità dell'aria interna. Inoltre, le proprietà di massa termica del calcestruzzo possono essere sfruttate per regolare le temperature interne. Si raccomandano materiali di copertura in calcestruzzo con elevata riflettanza solare o sistemi in calcestruzzo isolato per ridurre le richieste di aria condizionata mitigando l'assorbimento di calore. Inoltre, negli edifici in calcestruzzo sono possibili progetti che incorporano ampi spazi senza colonne e profondità del pavimento ridotte per massimizzare la luce naturale del giorno.

A sustainable concrete building can use several green design features to save energy, water, and materials. Concrete is a flexible material for these choices, so it supports eco-friendly construction in commercial buildings.

One strategy is to place a concrete parking area under the building. Open areas can use pervious concrete paver blocks, which let rainwater pass through and collect in an underground cistern. That stored water can then be reused for gardening, which improves water efficiency.

Material choices also matter. Ready-mixed concrete made from regional materials can lower transport needs. Slag cement, fly ash, and recycled aggregates can reduce material costs, and recycled steel can be used for reinforcement so more materials are recovered.

The building itself can also improve indoor conditions. Exposed concrete for walls, floors, and ceilings reduces the need for paints and coatings, which helps lower VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, in indoor air. Concrete’s thermal mass can help regulate indoor temperature, and roofing with high solar reflectance or insulated concrete systems can reduce air conditioning demand by limiting heat absorption. Designs with large column-free spaces and shallow floor depths can also bring in more natural daylight.
