Il calcestruzzo sottoposto all'attacco dei solfati presenta tipicamente un aspetto biancastro distinto, spesso inizialmente percepibile ai bordi e agli angoli, con successive fessurazioni e sfaldature.
La fessurazione nel calcestruzzo risulta grazie alla maggiore permeabilità, consentendo all'acqua con solfato di infiltrarsi nella struttura.
Il solfato infiltrato forma solfato di calcio e solfoalluminato di calcio, che occupano più spazio, provocando l'espansione e la rottura del calcestruzzo indurito, portando a problemi come lo spostamento delle pareti dell'edificio a causa della pressione laterale esercitata da una soletta in espansione.
Il suolo o le acque sotterranee sono la fonte abituale di solfati, come sodico, potassio, magnesio, ammonio e solfati di calcio, che causano danni quando entrano in contatto con il calcestruzzo.
I test di laboratorio per la resistenza del calcestruzzo all'attacco dei solfati comportano l'immersione o l'alternanza di campioni di bagnatura ed essiccazione in soluzioni di solfato di sodio o magnesio o una combinazione di entrambi.
L'impatto è misurato dalla perdita di forza, dall'espansione, dalla perdita di peso o dall'esame visivo del campione.
L'utilizzo di cemento resistente ai solfati o la riduzione dell'idrossido di calcio nella pasta di cemento idrata e il getto di calcestruzzo denso con un rapporto acqua-cemento inferiore aumentano la difesa del calcestruzzo contro l'attacco dei solfati.

Sulfate Attack on Concrete

L'attacco da solfati nel calcestruzzo è un processo di deterioramento caratterizzato da una decolorazione biancastra che inizia ai bordi e agli angoli, accompagnata da crepe e sfaldature. Questo fenomeno si verifica quando i solfati reagiscono con i componenti del calcestruzzo indurito, formando composti come il solfato di calcio e il solfoalluminato di calcio i quali occupano più spazio delle sostanze che sostituiscono, causando l'espansione e la rottura del calcestruzzo.


 I solfati provenienti da fonti come terreno, falde acquifere o effluenti industriali penetrano nel calcestruzzo e la loro reazione produce gesso ed ettringite. Questa reazione è simile a quella nella produzione del cemento, dove il gesso impedisce la presa rapida reagendo con l'alluminato tricalcico. Tuttavia, nel calcestruzzo indurito, questa reazione è indesiderabile in quanto può causare danni strutturali.


 La resistenza all'attacco dei solfati è un aspetto critico che di solito viene testato immergendo campioni di calcestruzzo in soluzioni di solfati. Questo metodo consente di osservare i cambiamenti nel campione, come la riduzione della resistenza, l'espansione e la perdita di peso. Anche l'ispezione visiva è uno strumento prezioso per identificare i danni. L'uso di cemento con un basso contenuto di alluminato tricalcico, come cemento resistente ai solfati e cemento miscelato, può migliorare significativamente la resistenza del calcestruzzo all'attacco dei solfati. La durabilità del calcestruzzo contro l'attacco dei solfati si basa anche sul raggiungimento di un basso rapporto acqua-cemento per una bassa permeabilità, un fattore cruciale per ridurre la probabilità di danni.

Concrete damage from sulfate exposure starts with a whitish discoloration, often first seen at the edges and corners. As the attack continues, the concrete can crack and spall. This deterioration happens when sulfates react with hardened concrete and create new compounds that take up more space than the materials they replace.

Sulfates may enter concrete from soil, groundwater, or industrial effluents. Inside the concrete, they can form calcium sulfate and calcium sulfoaluminate. The reaction also produces gypsum and ettringite, which expand and disrupt the hardened structure.

This process is related to the role of gypsum during cement manufacture. There, gypsum reacts with tricalcium aluminate to help prevent flash set. In hardened concrete, the same kind of reaction becomes harmful and can weaken the structure.

Engineers test sulfate resistance by immersing concrete samples in sulfate solutions. They then look for strength reduction, expansion, and weight loss. Visual inspection is also important because surface changes can help reveal damage.

Concrete can resist sulfate attack better when it uses cement with low tricalcium aluminate content. Sulfate-resisting cement and blended cement are both useful options. A low water-cement ratio also helps by lowering permeability, which reduces the chance of sulfate damage.
