Le strutture in calcestruzzo nei climi freddi, come i cordoli bagnati lungo le strade, trattengono l'umidità, rendendole vulnerabili all'azione del gelo e ai danni successivi.
I sali antigelo utilizzati nei cordoli attirano più acqua nel calcestruzzo, peggiorando il danno durante i cicli di gelo-disgelo quando le temperature fluttuano.
Il problema principale derivante dall'azione del gelo è l'incrostazione superficiale, in cui l'acqua penetra nella struttura porosa del calcestruzzo e rimane all'interno.
Quando le temperature scendono e l'acqua si congela, l'espansione dell'acqua congelata esercita una pressione sul calcestruzzo. Questa pressione può causare la rottura e la scheggiatura dello strato esterno del calcestruzzo.
Un altro problema significativo è il D-cracking, un tipo di danno vicino ai bordi e alle giunzioni. Queste crepe a forma di D indicano problemi strutturali più profondi, che minacciano la resistenza del calcestruzzo.
Il calcestruzzo privo di vuoti trascinati dall'aria, che forniscono spazio per l'espansione dell'acqua durante il congelamento, subisce gravi danni da ripetuti cicli di gelo-disgelo.

Inoltre, la pressione osmotica dei sali nell'acqua può forzare più acqua nei pori, intensificando la pressione durante i cicli di gelo-disgelo.


 Più in profondità nel calcestruzzo, si possono sviluppare delle crepe a D vicino ai bordi e alle giunzioni. Queste profonde crepe a D indicano significativi problemi di durabilità del calcestruzzo. Il calcestruzzo privo di vuoti intrappolati nell'aria è più vulnerabile ai cicli di gelo-disgelo. Questi vuoti sono piccoli spazi all'interno del calcestruzzo che fungono da tampone, consentendo all'acqua gelida di espandersi senza causare danni. Senza questi vuoti, l'espansione provoca più crepe e alla fine porta allo sfaldamento, che si verifica quando parti del calcestruzzo si staccano, indebolendo complessivamente la struttura.

Freeze-thaw damage in concrete is a major problem in cold climates. Roadside concrete and other outdoor structures can hold moisture, and that water can freeze when temperatures drop below freezing. When the weather changes again and again, repeated freezing and thawing can weaken the concrete over time.

De-icing salts can make the damage worse. These salts are spread on ice to help melt it, but they also pull more moisture into the concrete and add to the freeze-thaw cycle. Without them, the expanding ice causes more cracks and can lead to spalling, where pieces of concrete break away and weaken the structure.
