Air-entraining agents help concrete resist damage in cold climates. They also improve the workability of the mix. Their main role is to reduce cracking when freezing and thawing happen again and again.

These agents work by adding tiny air bubbles to the concrete. The bubbles give water room to expand when temperatures drop. They also lower the surface tension of water, which helps form stable, small bubbles instead of weak, accidental voids.

The goal is to create many small, evenly spread air spaces. That pattern protects concrete better than having a few large gaps. Air-entraining materials can include natural wood resins, animal and vegetable fats and oils, and synthetic detergents such as alkali salts.

These materials work in different ways. Some react with cement lime to form soluble resins. Others coat the bubbles so they do not merge. The result is air-entrained concrete with better resistance to freeze-thaw damage, which is especially useful in colder regions.

The effectiveness of air entrainment is measured by the spacing factor. This is the distance between air voids in hardened concrete. About 0.01 inch gives strong protection. The air bubbles are different from water-filled capillary pores, which contain cement hydration products. The bubbles act as extra voids that absorb the force of freezing water.
