La viscosità misura il modo in cui un fluido resiste al flusso a causa dell'attrito interno quando gli strati del fluido si muovono l'uno sull'altro.
Ad esempio, il miele scorre lentamente perché ha un'alta viscosità, mentre l'acqua scorre facilmente con una bassa viscosità.
Esistono due tipi principali di viscosità: dinamica e cinematica. La viscosità dinamica misura la forza necessaria per spostare uno strato di fluido su un altro.
Ad esempio, quando viene mescolato, il miele resiste al cucchiaio più dell'acqua. La viscosità cinematica è il rapporto tra la viscosità dinamica di un fluido e la sua densità, che descrive il modo in cui il fluido si diffonde per gravità.
I fluidi più comuni, come l'acqua e l'aria, hanno una viscosità costante indipendentemente dalla forza applicata.
Tuttavia, alcuni fluidi, come il ketchup, cambiano la loro viscosità a seconda della forza applicata; il ketchup scorre più facilmente quando la bottiglia viene agitata.
La temperatura influisce in modo significativo sulla viscosità, fondamentale nella progettazione di condutture, dove l'olio deve fluire senza intoppi.
Al contrario, l'aria calda in una sauna dimostra come temperature più elevate aumentino la viscosità dei gas.

Un esempio è lo sciroppo riscaldato, che si versa più facilmente rispetto a quando è freddo. Al contrario, temperature più elevate aumentano la viscosità nei gas, poiché l'attività molecolare e lo scambio di quantità di moto tra strati aumentano, motivo per cui l'aria calda sembra più densa in una sauna.

Per prevedere con precisione il comportamento dei fluidi, è necessario considerare questi effetti della temperatura, fondamentale nella progettazione di sistemi come condotte e motori di automobili. Nelle condotte, il petrolio deve scorrere senza problemi, mentre nei motori di automobili, la corretta viscosità dell'olio motore, assicura una lubrificazione e un'efficienza adeguate. Viscosity describes how much a fluid resists flow and deformation. It comes from internal friction between fluid layers that move past each other. Dynamic viscosity, shown by the Greek letter mu (μ), measures the force needed to move one layer over another.

Newtonian fluids, such as water and air, have a linear relationship between shearing stress and the rate of shearing strain. Their viscosity stays constant, even when the applied stress changes. Non-Newtonian fluids, like ketchup, toothpaste, and quicksand, do not behave this way. Their viscosity changes as the shear rate changes.

Temperature also has a strong effect on viscosity. For liquids, higher temperature lowers viscosity because intermolecular forces weaken and the fluid flows more easily. Heated syrup is a simple example. It pours more readily when warm than when it is cold.

For gases, the pattern is different. Higher temperature increases viscosity because molecular activity and momentum exchange between layers rise. Warm air can feel thicker, like the air in a sauna. Engineers need to account for these temperature effects when predicting fluid behavior.

This is important in systems such as pipelines and car engines. Oil in a pipeline must move smoothly. In a car engine, the right oil viscosity helps with lubrication and efficiency. Understanding viscosity helps engineers design and operate these systems under changing temperatures.
