L'equazione di continuità deriva dal principio di conservazione della massa, affermando che la massa del fluido che entra ed esce da un sistema rimane costante.
Per i fluidi incomprimibili, il prodotto dell'area del flusso e della velocità rimane costante lungo tutto il percorso del flusso, adattandosi alle variazioni delle sezioni trasversali.
Al diminuire dell'area della sezione trasversale, la velocità del fluido aumenta per mantenere una portata costante.
Questa relazione è fondamentale per l'analisi di sistemi come condutture dell'acqua, gestione delle acque piovane e canali aperti, garantendo stabilità ed efficienza in varie applicazioni di flusso dei fluidi.
Nei sistemi di approvvigionamento idrico, l'equazione di continuità aiuta a mantenere una distribuzione costante prevedendo le variazioni di velocità quando i tubi si restringono, il che è essenziale per evitare cadute di pressione.
Aiuta a progettare bacini di detenzione per la gestione delle acque piovane. Quando il deflusso entra nel bacino durante una tempesta, la velocità di deflusso deve corrispondere alla velocità di afflusso, regolata per prevenire inondazioni a valle.
Per i canali aperti come fiumi o canali, l'equazione di continuità aiuta a capire come le variazioni di larghezza o profondità influenzano i livelli dell'acqua e le velocità di flusso. Questa equazione, illustra che la velocità aumenta quando l'area della sezione trasversale diminuisce e viceversa, garantendo la conservazione della massa. Un esempio è il flusso attraverso una siringa. Quando lo stantuffo comprime il fluido attraverso un ugello, l'equazione di continuità mostra che se l'area di uscita è la metà dell'area di ingresso, la velocità di uscita deve essere il doppio della velocità di ingresso.

Un altro esempio è il flusso in un serbatoio a gravità. L'applicazione sia dell'equazione di Bernoulli che dell'equazione di continuità ai punti lungo il flusso, aiuta a determinare la velocità di uscita e la portata volumetrica:

dove h è l'altezza del fluido, D è il diametro del serbatoio e d è il diametro di uscita. Questa relazione mostra che la portata converge su un valore stabile, quando il diametro di uscita diventa piccolo rispetto al diametro del serbatoio. Fluid flow and area changes are linked by the continuity equation. For a steady flow of an incompressible fluid in a confined system, the mass flow rate stays constant. This idea is useful in nozzles, syringes, and pipes where the cross-sectional area changes.

The mass flow rate is written as an equation that connects density, area, and velocity. For incompressible flow, the density stays the same, so the equation becomes simpler. When the area gets smaller, the fluid speed must increase. When the area gets larger, the speed must decrease. This keeps mass conserved as the fluid moves.

A syringe shows this relationship clearly. When the plunger pushes fluid through a nozzle, the outlet speed rises if the outlet area is smaller than the inlet area. If the outlet area is half the inlet area, the outlet velocity is twice the inlet velocity.

A gravity-driven tank gives another example. Here, Bernoulli's equation and the continuity equation can be used together at points along the flow. They help find the outlet velocity and the volumetric flow rate. In this setup, h is the fluid height, D is the tank diameter, and d is the outlet diameter. The flow rate approaches a stable value as the outlet diameter becomes small compared with the tank diameter.
