I flussi possono essere classificati in base alla dimensionalità. Nel flusso unidimensionale, proprietà come la velocità e la pressione cambiano lungo una singola direzione, come si vede nell'acqua che si muove attraverso un tubo rettilineo.
Il flusso bidimensionale comporta variazioni sia in lunghezza che in profondità, come l'acqua che scorre in un canale aperto.
Il flusso tridimensionale è più complesso, con variazioni in tutte e tre le direzioni, come il vento che circola in un edificio.
I flussi sono anche classificati in base alla loro velocità e al modo in cui le particelle fluide si muovono. I tipi più comuni sono i flussi stazionari e instabili.
Un flusso costante, come l'acqua che si muove attraverso una tubazione del sistema di approvvigionamento idrico municipale, ha proprietà fluide che rimangono costanti in un dato punto nel tempo.
Un flusso instabile, come la variazione della velocità e della portata durante il deflusso delle acque piovane, subisce variazioni nelle proprietà del fluido nel tempo.
Un'altra distinzione importante è il flusso laminare e turbolento. Il flusso laminare è caratterizzato da un movimento fluido e ordinato, come l'acqua che si muove attraverso un tubo piccolo e liscio a basse velocità.
Al contrario, il flusso turbolento comporta un movimento caotico e irregolare dei fluidi, comunemente osservato nei fiumi o nei canali sotterranei durante gli eventi di inondazione.

I flussi di fluidi, sono classificati in base a dimensionalità e comportamento, con il flusso unidimensionale che è la forma più semplice, in cui proprietà come velocità e pressione, cambiano solo lungo un singolo asse. Il flusso bidimensionale, comporta variazioni sia in lunghezza che in altezza, come succede per l'aria che si muove su superfici piatte, come un ponte. Le variazioni si verificano in due direzioni, rendendo i calcoli più complessi rispetto al flusso unidimensionale. Il flusso tridimensionale, che è il più comlesso, comporta variazioni in tutte e tre le dimensioni spaziali: lunghezza, altezza e profondità. Il vento che circola intorno agli edifici presenta questo tipo di flusso, in cui le proprietà del fluido differiscono in più direzioni.

I flussi, sono anche classificati in base a come le proprietà del fluido cambiano nel tempo. Il flusso stazionario descrive situazioni in cui proprietà come velocità e pressione, rimangono costanti in qualsiasi momento nel tempo. Una conduttura in un sistema di approvvigionamento idrico comunale ne è un tipico esempio. Al contrario, il flusso non stazionario, come il deflusso delle acque piovane, presenta cambiamenti nelle proprietà del fluido nel tempo. L'analisi dei flussi non stazionari, richiede attenzione alle variazioni dipendenti dal tempo di velocità e pressione.

Anche la distinzione tra flusso laminare e turbolento è essenziale. Il flusso laminare presenta un movimento fluido regolare e ordinato, con strati fluidi che si muovono parallelamente e con una miscelazione minima. Le acque sotterranee che filtrano attraverso gli strati del terreno, spesso presentano un flusso laminare. Il flusso turbolento, d’altro canto, comporta un movimento caotico e irregolare, spesso osservato nei fiumi durante le inondazioni. Le particelle di fluido interagiscono in modi complessi, creando vortici e mulinelli, il che complica notevolmente l'analisi.

Fluid flow can be grouped by direction and by how it changes over time. The simplest case is one-dimensional flow. In this type, properties such as velocity and pressure change along only one axis. Water moving through a straight pipe is a common example, because changes in other directions are very small.

Two-dimensional flow changes in two directions. It varies in both length and height, so the analysis is more complex than one-dimensional flow. Air moving over a flat surface, such as a bridge deck, shows this pattern.

Three-dimensional flow is the most complex type. It involves changes in length, height, and depth. Wind moving around buildings is an example, since fluid properties can differ in multiple directions.

Flows are also classified by whether they stay the same over time. In steady flow, velocity and pressure remain constant at a point as time passes. A pipeline in a municipal water supply system is a typical example. Unsteady flow is different because fluid properties change over time. Stormwater runoff is one example, and it requires attention to time-dependent changes in velocity and pressure.

Another important split is between laminar and turbulent flow. Laminar flow is smooth and orderly, with fluid layers moving in parallel and very little mixing. Groundwater seeping through soil layers often follows this pattern. Turbulent flow is chaotic and irregular. It often appears in rivers during floods, where swirling eddies and vortices make the motion much harder to analyze.

Tracking Fluid Motion in Space and Time

Fluid flow can be described with the Eulerian and Lagrangian methods. These two approaches give different views of the same moving fluid. They are useful in science and engineering because the best method depends on the problem being studied. The Eulerian method looks at fixed points in space. At each location, it measures fluid properties such as velocity, pressure, and temperature as the fluid moves past. This stationary view is useful when studying how a fluid interacts with a solid object.
