Quando l'acqua entra ed esce da questo volume di controllo, le leggi di conservazione per la massa, la quantità di moto e l'energia vengono utilizzate per studiare il flusso senza tracciare le singole particelle d'acqua.
Il volume di controllo rimane fisso mentre il fluido si muove attraverso di esso, riducendo la complessità.
Al contrario, un sistema si riferisce a una specifica massa di fluido che viene seguita nel tempo. Considera un serbatoio dell'acqua che contiene una quantità fissa di acqua.
L'acqua all'interno della vasca rappresenta il sistema. Mentre l'acqua defluisce o si riempie, lo stesso sistema di acqua viene tracciato, concentrandosi sul suo comportamento e sui cambiamenti nel tempo.
La rappresentazione del sistema consente un'analisi di questa massa fissa di acqua, anche al variare dello stato del serbatoio.
Mentre il sistema segue la massa specifica del fluido, l'approccio del volume di controllo rimane stazionario e si concentra su una particolare regione dello spazio.

Per analizzare il trasferimento di massa, energia e quantità di moto, vengono impiegati due framework chiave: l'approccio del volume di controllo e l'approccio del sistema. L'acqua all'interno del serbatoio rappresenta un sistema e mentre si svuota o si riempie, viene analizzata la stessa massa d'acqua. Il comportamento del sistema, viene studiato in quanto forze esterne e trasferimenti di energia, causano cambiamenti nello stato del fluido. Questo approccio è particolarmente utile quando si analizzano processi termodinamici, in cui la massa esatta e il suo contenuto di energia o la quantità di moto, sono critici, come negli scenari di trasferimento di calore o cambiamento di fase in sistemi chiusi.

Mentre il volume di controllo è fisso nello spazio e si concentra sullo scambio di quantità attraverso la sua superficie, l'approccio di sistema, traccia l'evoluzione di una massa specifica di fluido. Queste metodologie sono complementari e offrono flessibilità nella dinamica dei fluidi e nell'analisi termodinamica.

Fluid analysis often uses two linked ideas: the control volume approach and the system approach. Both help describe mass, energy, and momentum transfer, but they focus on different things. One follows a region in space. The other follows a fixed mass of fluid over time.

The control volume approach looks at a stationary area in space through which fluid moves. That area is bounded by a control surface, which is the outer edge of the region. A pipe with water flowing through it is a clear example. In that case, the control volume is a fixed section of the pipe.

This method makes it easier to apply conservation laws for mass, energy, and momentum. It does not require tracking each fluid particle. Instead, it studies how fluid enters and exits the control surface. This makes it useful for both steady flow and unsteady flow.

The system approach uses a different viewpoint. It tracks a specific mass of fluid as conditions change. Water in a tank is a good example. As the tank drains or fills, the same mass of water is treated as the system.

This approach is especially useful in thermodynamics. It helps when the exact mass and its energy or momentum content matter, such as in closed-system heat transfer or phase change. The system changes because external forces and energy transfers act on it.

Together, the control volume and system approaches give students flexible ways to study fluid dynamics and thermodynamics. One focuses on what crosses a boundary in space. The other focuses on how one mass of fluid changes over time.

Tracking Fluid Motion in Space and Time
