Vertical curves help roadways move smoothly from one grade to another. Engineers use them to connect changing slopes and keep the road profile safe and even. To design these curves, they calculate intermediate elevations and find the highest or lowest point on the curve.

Intermediate elevations on a vertical curve are found with the tangent offset method. This method uses the starting elevation, the grades at each end, and the curve shape. It gives the elevation of any point along the curve by combining the tangent grade line with the offset from that line.

The highest or lowest point of the curve is the place where the road slope becomes zero. This critical point usually lies somewhere between the start and end of the curve. To locate it, engineers first find the rate of grade change, also called the curvature, by dividing the total grade difference by the curve length. They then divide the initial grade by that rate to find the distance from the start of the curve to the critical point.

After that, the elevation at the critical point is calculated by adding the tangent grade-line elevation and the tangent offset. Getting these elevations right matters for drainage and safety. In drainage areas or high-speed zones, accurate elevation data helps prevent water buildup and supports adequate sight distance. These calculations also help create smooth roadway profiles and better driving conditions.
