Un serbatoio d'acqua si riempie e svuota simultaneamente, causando variazioni del livello dell'acqua a causa di diseguali flussi di ingresso e scarico. L'obiettivo è scoprire quanto tempo ci vuole perché il serbatoio si svuoti. Questo si esprime come il rapporto tra volume d'acqua e velocità di drenaggio, che cambia nel tempo poiché entrambi sono funzioni differenziabili nel tempo.Quando l'acqua entra nel serbatoio, il volume totale aumenta leggermente, mentre anche la velocità di drenaggio varia a causa delle modifiche del sistema. Questi piccoli cambiamenti influenzano il quoziente complessivo volume/drenaggio.Per trovare il tasso di variazione del quoziente, si considera la variazione del quoziente su un piccolo intervallo di tempo, e poi si divide questa variazione per quell'intervallo.Introducendo un limite quando l'intervallo di tempo si avvicina a zero, il delta R si avvicina anche a zero perché R varia continuamente nel tempo, semplificando il denominatore.
