Stabilire con precisione quanta acqua sia entrata nel serbatoio in un determinato intervallo &#xE8; essenziale per mantenere una pressione adeguata, pianificare le operazioni e garantire la sicurezza del sistema.
La portata dell&#x2019;acqua in ingresso al serbatoio &#xE8; descritta da una funzione dipendente dal tempo. Per determinare il volume totale d&#x2019;acqua entrato nel serbatoio dall&#x2019;istante iniziale fino a un istante successivo, &#xE8; necessario accumulare la portata variabile lungo tale intervallo. Questa funzione di accumulo &#xE8; derivabile in tutto l&#x2019;intervallo e il suo tasso di variazione in ciascun punto &#xE8; esattamente uguale al tasso originale in quel medesimo punto. In sostanza, l&#x2019;integrazione descrive l&#x2019;accumulo totale, mentre la derivazione consente di ricavare il tasso di variazione originario.

The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus connects accumulation and rate of change. In this lesson, the idea is shown with a water tank that is filled by a pump. The pump rate changes over time, so the total water collected must be found by adding up the changing inflow.

In water management, this kind of calculation matters for pressure control, operation timing, and system safety. The flow rate is given by a time-dependent function. To find how much water has entered the tank from the start to a later time, the changing rate must be accumulated over that interval.

Graphically, the total volume is the area under the flow-rate curve from the starting time to the time of interest. That area represents the combined effect of the inflow at every instant during pumping. The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, Part 1, explains why this works.

The theorem says that if a rate function is continuous on an interval, then an accumulated function can be defined from a fixed starting point to a variable endpoint. This accumulated function is differentiable on the interval. Its rate of change at any point is the original rate function at that same point.

For the water tank, the accumulated volume function shows how much water has entered by any given time. The instantaneous rate of change of that volume equals the flow rate at that moment. This gives a clear link between integration, which finds total accumulation, and differentiation, which recovers the original rate of change.
