Questa retta, a cui il grafico si avvicina senza mai toccarla, rappresenta il comportamento a lungo termine della funzione (asintoto orizzontale).
Un altro esempio di questo tipo di comportamento si osserva in una funzione che tende asintoticamente a valori diversi a seconda che la variabile indipendente aumenti o diminuisca senza limiti. Il valore della funzione si avvicina a un certo valore superiore quando la variabile indipendente diventa estremamente grande in direzione positiva. Al contrario, quando la variabile indipendente diventa molto grande in direzione negativa, il valore della funzione si avvicina a un diverso valore inferiore. Questi due valori limite non vengono n&#233; attraversati n&#233; raggiunti dalla funzione, ma indicano come la funzione si comporta quando la variabile indipendente si spinge verso valori estremi in entrambe le direzioni. Su un grafico, la curva della funzione si incurva dolcemente e si avvicina a questi valori limite superiore e inferiore, mostrando una transizione graduale senza bruschi cambiamenti.
Questo tipo di analisi aiuta a comprendere il comportamento delle funzioni nel lungo periodo ed &#232; essenziale in molti ambiti della matematica, soprattutto nella descrizione di tendenze, nella stima di valori e nella modellazione di fenomeni del mondo reale in termini astratti. Horizontal asymptotes describe how a function behaves as the input grows very large. In this topic, a decreasing function gets smaller and smaller as the input increases.
