Immagina un'auto che viaggia su una strada tortuosa; la sua posizione nel tempo può essere rappresentata come una curva liscia su un grafico.Per osservare il cambiamento della posizione dell'auto tra due punti, si può tracciare una linea retta che li collega - questa linea è chiamata linea secante.La pendenza della linea secante cattura la velocità media della vettura durante quell'intervallo. Rappresenta il cambiamento di posizione diviso per il cambiamento temporale.Per capire come cambia la direzione dell'auto in un determinato punto, i due punti lungo la curva possono essere spostati sempre più vicini.Quando il cambiamento temporale si avvicina a zero, il limite della pendenza della retta secante si trasforma in una retta tangente.La retta tangente tocca la curva in un singolo punto e condivide la stessa velocità istantanea di variazione della curva in quel punto.La pendenza di questa retta tangente dà la velocità istantanea in quel punto ed è definita come la derivata della curva in quella posizione.Più rette tangenti rivelano come la velocità istantanea varia lungo l'intera curva.Le rette tangenti sono ampiamente usate—ad esempio, nella dinamica delle popolazioni, la pendenza in un punto della curva popolazione-tempo fornisce il tasso di crescita istantaneo.

Differential calculus helps describe how a quantity changes at a specific point. A moving car on a winding road gives a clear example. The car’s path is a continuous curve, and the direction it travels at any instant is shown by the tangent to that curve.

A secant line, by contrast, crosses the curve at two points. It shows how the car’s position changes over an interval, so it describes average behavior rather than an instant. The slope of the secant line between two points on a function f(x) is a ratio that gives the average rate of change over that interval.

As the point x+h moves closer to x, the secant line smoothly becomes the tangent line. This idea leads to the tangent line problem, which asks for the instantaneous rate of change at one point on the curve. The slope of the tangent line is the limit of the secant slope as h approaches 0, and this limit is the derivative f′(x).

Once the slope is known, the tangent line equation can be written with point-slope form at the point (x₀, f(x₀)).
