すべての被験者はお互いに知られておらず、実験の目的や、「キャンプスタッフ」のメンバーに変装した研究者によって目立つように観察され、記録されることにも気づいていませんでした。

最初のグループ内形成段階では、11歳から12歳の子供たちは別々のバスで到着しましたが、孤立した場所に収容されていたため、他の子供たちの存在を知らなかった。彼らは、ハイキングやカヌーなどの活動に参加しながら、グループ内での絆を深めるように指示されました。

最初の1週間で、少年たちはつながりを持ち、グループの規範を確立し、歌を歌ったり、ゲームをしたり、自分たちのアイデンティティを確立したりしました。彼らは今、イーグルスとラトラーズです。

次のパートを設定するために、ラトラーズはイーグルスの演奏を聞くために、球場の近くを歩き回ることを許可されました。翌日の練習で、ラトラーズは表向きにフィールドを「彼らのもの」と宣言しました。

第2段階であるグループ間摩擦の段階では、スタッフは正式に別のグループの存在を発表しました。この事実をきっかけに、「私たち」と「彼ら」の意識が高まり、両チームとも熱いライバル関係を繰り広げました。

一連のイベントでは、グループは野球や綱引きなどの活動のトーナメントで競います。ほとんどの結果は勝利したチームによって決定されましたが、キャビンの検査など、いくつかの機会はスタッフによって判断され、ポイントの合計をタイトに保ち、チームの勝利へのモチベーションを維持しました。

次の週にわたり、双方は、物理的な参加にそれほど積極的でないキャンパーでさえも、名指しや屈辱の数多くの事件に参加した。

日が経つにつれ、敗者たちのフラストレーションはより肉体的なものになっていった:イーグルスがラトラーズの旗を燃やし、その結果、メンバーは報復し、勝利の匂いが近づくにつれてスポーツマンシップは衰え、不公平な戦術が自信に満ちたラトラーズのバランスを崩した。

勝利と敗北の翌日、研究者たちは、ビーチでの文明的な水泳の時間など、全員が涼み、グループ内での活動を楽しむための時間を費やしました。

第2フェーズの終わりに、グループは再び互いに物理的に近接して配置され、彼らの行動が観察されました。彼らの回答は、自分自身の内集団を好意的に分類する傾向を確認し、肯定的な集団関係を示し、外集団を好ましくないと分類する傾向を確認し、否定的な集団間態度の持続性を強調しました。

最終段階であるグループ間統合フェーズでは、研究者は、グループの態度と行動を調和させるために、2つが協力して共通の目的(上位の目標)を達成しなければならない多数の非競争的な状況を作り上げました。たとえば、キャンプトラックが立ち往生し、全員が車両を引っ張って始動させなければなりませんでした。

やがて、「私たち」対「彼ら」の分裂は、集団間の敵意とともに消え去った。少年たちは前向きに滞在を終え、1台のバスでキャンプを出発しました。

最終的には、共通の目標を達成するために協力することで、敵と見なした人々を友人に分解し、対立を助長する可能性のある社会的障壁を打ち破ることができるかもしれません。

The Robbers Cave study shows how group conflict can grow when teams are forced to compete. In the 1950s, two boys’ groups at an Oklahoma summer camp, called the Rattlers and the Eagles, entered a week-long tournament. As the competition continued, their hostility grew into name-calling, fistfights, vandalism, and damage to property.

The study also showed one way to reduce that tension. Researchers used superordinate goals, which are shared goals that groups can only reach by working together. In the Robbers Cave experiment, the boys teamed up to push a truck and pooled their money to watch the movie Treasure Island.

These shared tasks helped change how the groups saw each other. One effect was decategorization, where people start to see members of the other group as separate individuals instead of as part of an enemy “them.” Another effect was recategorization, where both groups begin to see themselves as part of one larger “we,” such as the same camp or, in this case, Oklahomans riding home together on one bus and singing “Oklahoma.”

The lessons from Robbers Cave still matter today. Intergroup conflict can appear in schools, workplaces, healthcare systems, and even wars between nations. Researchers have used this idea to think about hospital mergers, where workers may suspect one another and avoid sharing patient or work information if they feel they are competing for jobs. Reassuring employees that their jobs are secure and stressing a shared goal, like giving all patients strong and accessible care, may help lower conflict.

The same idea can also help in desegregated schools, where students from different racial or ethnic groups may have negative interactions. Superordinate goals linked to extracurricular activities can improve relationships. A football team, for example, can bring students together around the shared goal of winning games. Teachers can also strengthen respect by showing how each player contributes and by emphasizing that everyone represents the same school.
