Dot Product: Problem Solving

The dot product helps solve vector questions by combining vector size and the cosine of the angle between them. It is useful when the angle is measured anti-clockwise and when a problem asks for a vector relationship in component form.

A good first step is to identify the question being asked. Then list the given vectors and write them in Cartesian form, also called component form. This makes the data easier to use in a calculation.

Next, decide whether the dot product is the right operation. It is used to find the angle between two vectors, the component of a vector in a chosen direction, whether two vectors are orthogonal, or the projection of one vector onto another. If the problem does not need one of these ideas, another method may be better.

To calculate the dot product, multiply matching components and add the results. After that, check the answer against the conditions in the problem. Round the result when needed and include units when they apply.

The angle between two vectors can be found with the inverse cosine of their dot product divided by the product of their magnitudes. The dot product can also find a component along a direction by projecting a vector onto a unit vector in that direction. This is useful for breaking a harder vector problem into simpler parts.

The dot product also tests orthogonality. If the dot product is zero, the vectors are orthogonal, which means they are perpendicular. Projection of one vector onto another can be found with the dot product by using the magnitude of the first vector and the cosine of the angle between the two vectors.
