Block Diagram Reduction

Simplifying control system block diagrams helps make a system easier to analyze. The goal is to reduce several connected blocks to one block so the transfer function can be found more easily. This process keeps the system behavior the same while making the diagram simpler to work with.

A branch point is the place where one signal splits into multiple paths. To simplify the diagram, the branch point can be moved to a new location. The new position must preserve the mathematical relationship between the signals, and the output should stay unchanged. When that happens, the move is successful and the diagram becomes easier to combine.

A comparator is another key part of a block diagram. It subtracts one signal from another. Like a branch point, a comparator can also be shifted to a different position if the signal relationships remain correct. Careful placement helps preserve the feedback and feedforward paths while making it easier to line up blocks for combination.

After these moves, separate blocks can be merged into fewer blocks. This reduces the overall complexity of the control system diagram. The last step is removing several feedback loops, which helps simplify the transfer function further. Feedback loops often add recursive relationships, so taking them out makes the final block diagram much easier to read and use.
