Binary Fission

Binary fission is the main way prokaryotes, such as bacteria, reproduce asexually. It produces two daughter cells that are genetically identical. When conditions are favorable, this process helps bacterial populations grow quickly.

The process starts when the bacterial chromosome is copied. The circular DNA unwinds at a specific origin of replication called oriC. DNA polymerases then build matching strands in both directions until replication reaches the terminus. This creates two identical copies of the genetic material.

At the same time, the new DNA molecules move toward opposite poles of the cell. Protein-based segregation helps guide this movement. This keeps the genetic material from overlapping as the cell prepares to divide.

As the DNA separates, the bacterial cell elongates. The cell also duplicates its cytoplasmic contents and other cellular components. This gives each future daughter cell the machinery it needs to function on its own.

Cell division begins when the FtsZ protein forms a Z-ring at the middle of the cell. Anchoring proteins stabilize this ring, and more proteins join to form the divisome. The divisome is the protein complex that carries out cell division.

The divisome directs the formation of new peptidoglycan and builds a septum, which is the new dividing wall. The septum grows inward until it splits the cell into two daughter cells. Careful control of septum formation helps keep the cell intact during division. Binary fission shows how efficiently prokaryotes can reproduce and spread under favorable conditions.

Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins which carry out the essential functions of life through systems of specialized cells. Emphasis is on the conceptual understanding that DNA sequences determine the amino acid sequence and thus protein structure. Students can produce scientific writing, or presentations, and/or physical models that communicate constructed explanations.
