Real numbers are the values that can be placed on a continuous number line. The system grew from counting numbers used for enumeration. It later expanded to include zero, which shows the absence of quantity, and negative numbers, which are opposites of counting numbers.

The real number system also includes fractions and decimals that represent parts of a whole or equal divisions. When written in decimal form, these numbers may end or repeat in a regular pattern. Together, these values describe many everyday measurements and quantities.

Some real numbers are not rational, which means they cannot be written as a ratio of whole numbers. Their decimal expansions do not end and do not follow a predictable repeating pattern. Examples include the diagonal of a unit square and the ratio of a circle’s perimeter to its width.

Rational and irrational numbers make up the full set of real numbers. Each real number matches one unique point on the number line. Decimal notation can be used to approximate any real number, and adding more digits makes the approximation more accurate.

Real numbers follow clear rules for operations. The order and grouping of numbers do not change the result for addition and multiplication. Multiplication also distributes over addition in a consistent way.

Within this system, some numbers act as identities. Adding zero leaves a number unchanged, and multiplying by one leaves it unchanged. Every real number also has an additive opposite that gives zero when the two are added.

Absolute value gives the distance of a number from zero. It is always positive or zero. The distance between any two numbers on the line can also be described with absolute value, which shows the geometric structure of real numbers.
