Exponents show repeated multiplication in a short form. They are important in algebra and in many other math topics, including scientific computation, scaling laws, and dimensional analysis. For a nonzero real number a and an integer n, a^n means a multiplied by itself n times.

Exponent rules help simplify expressions with powers. These properties make it easier to work with exponential expressions in both symbolic and numerical form. They also support common calculations that use exponents in different contexts.

Scientific notation writes numbers as a × 10^n, where 1 ≤ a &lt; 10 and n is an integer. It is useful for very large or very small numbers. For example, 4.6 × 10^-4 shows a small value, while 6.97 × 10^9 shows a large one.

Scientific notation also uses exponent rules during calculation. When multiplying or dividing, you can work with the coefficients and adjust the powers of ten. This keeps numbers easier to read while maintaining precision in scientific work.
