Functions describe input-output relationships that follow a clear rule. In a function, each input matches one corresponding output. This makes functions useful for showing how quantities change and for making predictions in math and science.

A parking garage fee system is one common example. The input is the number of non-negative hours a car stays inside. Negative time does not make sense in this setting. The total cost starts with a flat entry charge and then rises by a steady hourly rate, so the relationship grows in a linear way.

The same function can be shown in several forms. It can be described in words, displayed on a graph, listed in a table, or written as a formula. Each form shows the same rule for how the cost changes over time. These representations help students connect the pattern to the function itself.

Functions also appear in natural settings. A hiking trail’s elevation change is one example. Here, distance traveled is the input and elevation is the output. Unlike the parking fee, this function changes smoothly and forms a continuous curve because the terrain changes gradually.

Looking at functions through graphs, tables, verbal descriptions, and formulas gives a fuller picture of the relationship. It helps learners see both man-made systems and natural processes as input-output patterns. That understanding is important for modeling change in many real-world situations.
