双曲線は、平面が円錐の両方のナップを切断し、枝と呼ばれる2つの開いた曲線を作成するときに形成されます。枝は長さ2aの横軸に沿って伸びており、ここでaは中心から各頂点までの距離です。これに垂直な共役軸があり、長さ2bの共役軸があり、寸法2a x 2bの長方形を定義し、その対角線は漸近線として外側に伸びており、枝を導くが交差することはありません。双曲線は、焦点と呼ばれる2つの固定点までの距離の絶対差が一定で2aに等しい点の集合として定義されます。焦点は、 x軸に沿ってマイナス c とプラス cに配置され、 c は中心から各焦点までの距離です。点 P と各焦点の間の距離式を適用すると、二乗すると平方根が除去される式が得られます。次に、二乗項が展開され、続いて代数的単純化が続きます。さらに二乗して単純化すると、残りの部首が排除されます。次に、関係 b の 2 乗を c の 2 乗から 2 乗 (ピタゴラスの定理の形式) を引いた 2 乗に等しくなると、標準方程式が得られます。双曲線形状は、その形状が強度と空気の流れを高めるため、冷却塔に使用されます。

Hyperbolas

hyperbolas: foci, vertices, and asymptotes

Hyperbolas are conic sections with two separate branches. They form when a plane cuts through a double-napped cone at a steeper angle than the cone’s slope, so the plane passes through both nappes. The two curves are mirror images and open away from each other along the transverse axis.

The closest points on the branches to the center are called vertices. The distance from the center to a vertex is labeled a. The axis perpendicular to the transverse axis is the conjugate axis, and it is linked to b. The value of b changes the shape of the branches, but it does not change how open they are.

A hyperbola can also be defined by distance. It is the set of all points where the absolute difference of the distances to two fixed points, called foci, stays constant. This property sets hyperbolas apart from ellipses and parabolas.

The standard equation of a hyperbola has squared terms with opposite signs. It may be written for a horizontal opening or for a vertical opening, with (h, k) as the center. The positive term shows the transverse axis, which is the direction the branches open. From this form, you can identify the center, vertices, and asymptotes.

Hyperbolic shapes also appear in engineering. Power plant cooling towers often use a hyperbolic contour. This shape can improve structural stability by spreading stress efficiently, and it can also support thermal performance by helping natural convection and airflow through the tower.
