平面が二重起毛円錐と、その辺の1つに平行な方向に交差すると、放物線と呼ばれるU字型の曲線が形成されます。放物線のジオメトリは、各点を焦点と直向から等距離にします。この構造により、入射する平行光線が焦点に向かって反射します。この原理は、衛星放送受信アンテナで受信信号を受信機に向けるために使用されます。たとえば、幅6メートル、奥行き1メートルの衛星放送受信アンテナでは、受信機は受信アンテナの断面の焦点に配置され、頂点の上 p 単位に配置されます。受信機の距離を決定するために、3次元皿の2次元断面は、頂点が原点にある上向きに開く放物線としてモデル化されます。まず、曲線上の点 (3, 1) が識別され、皿の幅と深さの半分を表します。標準形式 x2 = 4py と点の座標を使用して、 p の値が計算されます。方程式を解くと p = 2.25 mが得られ、焦点(したがって受信機)が頂点から2.25メートル上にあることを示します。このセットアップにより、受信機に信号が正確に集中することが保証されます。

A parabola is a U-shaped conic section with an important reflective property. It forms when a plane cuts a double-napped cone in a direction parallel to one side of the cone. In geometry, a parabola is also defined as the set of points that are equally far from a fixed point, called the focus, and a fixed line, called the directrix.

This curve has a useful way of handling light, sound, and other parallel rays. Incoming rays that travel parallel to the axis of symmetry reflect toward one point. That point is the focus. For an upward-opening parabola, the standard equation is x2 = 4py, where p is the distance between the vertex and the focus.

The focus helps explain why parabolas appear in many technologies that need signal control. Satellite dishes, telescopes, and parabolic microphones use this shape to concentrate incoming or outgoing signals. In these devices, the receiver or transmitter is placed at the focus so the energy is collected or sent in a controlled way. When the cross-section of the device is modeled as a parabola, the focal point can be found from the dish's width and depth. This makes it possible to align the receiver at the correct spot and improve signal capture and transmission.
