Trigonometric and exponential functions help model two major patterns in science and math: repeating cycles and fast growth or decay. These functions extend basic algebra by describing behavior that changes in ways a straight line cannot. They are useful in many real-world settings, especially in science and engineering.

Trigonometric functions such as sine and cosine are best for periodic phenomena, which means patterns that repeat over and over. Their smooth curves continue for all real numbers and repeat at regular intervals called periods. This makes them a strong choice for oscillating systems like sound waves, alternating current, and mechanical vibrations.

A Ferris wheel is a clear example of this type of motion. As each cabin moves, it follows a circular path over time. The standard period of the sine and cosine functions matches one complete rotation, which is why these functions can model repetitive motion so well.

Exponential functions describe multiplicative change and are written in the form f(x) = a^x, where a &gt; 0 and a ≠ 1. When a is greater than 1, the function shows rapid growth. This includes situations such as unchecked population increase and compound interest.

When 0 &lt; a &lt; 1, exponential functions show decay instead of growth. They can represent radioactive substances and cooling rates. These graphs rise or fall very quickly, and their simple form makes them powerful tools for describing compounding behavior over time.
