Motor Units

운동 단위(motor unit)는 두 개의 주요 구성 요소로 이루어져 있습니다: 원심성 운동 뉴런(efferent motor neuron; 중추신경계에서 자극을 멀리 전달하는 뉴런)과 이 뉴런이 분포된(innervate) 모든 근육 섬유입니다. 이 운동 뉴런은 단일 세포를 이루는 여러 근육섬유에 분포할 수도 있지만, 대개 하나의 운동 뉴런이 하나의 근육섬유에 있습니다.
 
 하위 운동 뉴런(lower motor neuron; 하위운동신경원; 아래운동신경세포)은 신체에서 가장 풍부한 근육의 형태인 골격근(skeletal muscle)을 조절하는 원심성(efferent) 뉴런입니다. 하위 운동 뉴런의 세포체(cell body)는 척수(spinal cord)나 뇌줄기(brainstem; 뇌간)에 있습니다. 뇌줄기는 뇌신경(cranial nerve)을 통해 신경 신호를 전달하며, 주로 머리와 목의 근육을 조절합니다. 척수에서 발원하는 하위 운동 뉴런은 척수 신경(spinal nerve)을 따라 신호를 보내며, 주로 팔다리와 몸통 근육을 조절합니다.
 
 하위 운동 뉴런은 활동전위(action potential)를 발화해 뉴런이 분포한 모든 골격근 세포를 동시에 수축시킵니다. 따라서, 운동 단위는 골격근의 기능 단위(functional unit)입니다.
 
 운동 단위의 크기, 즉 하위 운동 뉴런이 분포된 근육 섬유의 수는 근육의 크기와 움직임이 요구하는 속도와 정밀도에 따라 달라집니다. 빠르고 정확한 조절이 필요한 눈과 손가락의 근육은 일반적으로 작은 운동 단위에 의해 조절됩니다. 이런 작은 단위에 있는 운동 뉴런은 적은 수의 근육 섬유와 연결됩니다. 반면, 팔다리와 몸통 운동을 위한 운동 단위는 일반적으로 크고 많은 근육 섬유로 구성되어 있습니다.

Motor units control skeletal muscle movement. A motor unit includes one efferent motor neuron, which carries signals away from the central nervous system, and all of the muscle fibers it innervates. A single motor neuron can connect with multiple muscle fibers, but each muscle fiber is innervated by only one motor neuron.

Lower motor neurons are the efferent neurons that control skeletal muscle, the most abundant type of muscle in the body. Their cell bodies are found in the spinal cord or brain stem. Neurons in the brain stem send signals through cranial nerves and mainly control muscles in the head and neck.

Lower motor neurons in the spinal cord send signals through spinal nerves. These neurons mainly control muscles in the limbs and body trunk. When a lower motor neuron fires an action potential, all of the skeletal muscle cells it innervates contract at the same time.

Motor units are the functional units of skeletal muscle. Their size depends on the size of the muscle and on how fast and precise the movement must be. Muscles in the eyes and fingers usually have small motor units for rapid, precise control, while motor units for limb and trunk movement are generally large and contain many muscle fibers.
