pi control: zero placement and stability

PI control uses proportional and integral action to improve stability and reduce steady-state error in control systems. It is used in everyday devices such as thermostats, where better damping can improve performance. A well-placed zero in the controller transfer function can make the system more accurate and stable.

A PI controller also behaves like a low-pass filter. That means it slows the response and can increase settling time. For that reason, the zero should be placed near the beginning of the frequency range and away from major poles, with small proportional and integral gains when possible.

The controller is often shown with a Bode plot, which displays how the transfer function changes with frequency. This helps show the effect of the proportional and integral parts on system behavior. Too little proportional gain can leave a steady-state error, while both proportional and integral action are needed to manage attenuation and stability.

Phase margin is another key design concern. The PI controller adds negative phase, which can hurt stability if the corner frequency is not placed far enough to the left while still meeting bandwidth needs. The compensated transfer function should cross the zero-decibel line at the new gain crossover frequency so the desired phase margin is maintained.

Designing a PI controller also means setting the ratio of integral gain to proportional gain at a frequency that is much lower than the main operating range. This balances responsiveness and stability. It also helps avoid the need for a large capacitor, which is a bigger implementation challenge for PI controllers than for PD controllers. Large capacitors can increase size and cost, so careful gain selection is important.
