연석에 사용되는 제빙염은 콘크리트로 더 많은 물을 끌어들여 온도 변동에 따른 동결-해동 주기 동안 손상을 악화시킵니다.
서리 작용으로 인해 발생하는 주요 문제는 물이 콘크리트의 다공성 구조를 관통하여 내부에 남아 있는 표면 스케일링입니다.
온도가 떨어지고 물이 얼면 얼어붙은 물의 팽창으로 콘크리트에 압력이 가해집니다. 이 압력으로 인해 콘크리트의 외층이 갈라지고 부서질 수 있습니다.
또 다른 중요한 문제는 가장자리와 조인트 근처의 손상 유형인 D-균열입니다. 이러한 D자형 균열은 콘크리트의 강도를 위협하는 더 깊은 구조적 문제를 나타냅니다.
동결 중 물 팽창을 위한 공간을 제공하는 공기 동반 공극이 없는 콘크리트는 반복되는 동결-해동 주기로 인해 심각한 손상을 입습니다.
각 주기는 콘크리트를 팽창시켜 더 많은 균열을 일으키고 결국 구조물에서 콘크리트 파편을 분리하고 콘크리트의 구조적 강도를 크게 감소시키는 파괴적인 과정인 쪼개짐으로 이어집니다.

도로변과 같은 추운 기후의 콘크리트 구조물은 습기를 유지할 수 있습니다. 이 습기로 인해 기온이 영하로 떨어지면 서리 관련 손상에 취약해집니다. 습기를 추가하면 온도 변동 시 손상이 심해져 동결과 해동이 반복됩니다. 얼음을 녹이는 이러한 구조물에 뿌려진 제빙 소금은 동결-해동 주기를 늘리고 콘크리트로 더 많은 습기를 끌어들입니다.


 이 동결-융해 주기는 주로 표면 스케일링을 유발하는데, 여기서 물이 콘크리트로 스며들어 얼면서 팽창하고 압력을 가합니다. 이 압력은 콘크리트의 표면층을 파쇄하여 균열과 칩을 초래할 수 있습니다. 콘크리트 기공의 물이 얼면 주변 겔수와 열역학적 불균형을 만들어 더 많은 물이 유입되어 얼어 압력이 증가합니다. 또한 물 속의 염분으로 인한 삼투압으로 인해 더 많은 물이 기공으로 강제로 유입되어 동결-융해 주기 동안 압력이 강화될 수 있습니다.


 콘크리트 내부에서 더 깊은 곳에서는 모서리와 조인트 근처에서 D형 균열이 발생할 수 있습니다. 이러한 깊고 D자 모양의 균열은 콘크리트의 내구성에 상당한 문제가 있음을 나타냅니다. 공기가 유입된 공극이 없는 콘크리트는 동결-융해 주기에 가장 취약합니다. 이러한 공극은 콘크리트 내부의 작은 공간으로, 버퍼 역할을 하여 얼어붙은 물이 손상 없이 확장될 수 있도록 합니다. 이러한 공극이 없으면 확장으로 인해 균열이 더 생기고 결국 콘크리트의 일부가 깨져서 전체 구조가 약해지는 스폴링이 발생합니다.

Freeze-thaw damage in concrete is a major problem in cold climates. Roadside concrete and other outdoor structures can hold moisture, and that water can freeze when temperatures drop below freezing. When the weather changes again and again, repeated freezing and thawing can weaken the concrete over time.

De-icing salts can make the damage worse. These salts are spread on ice to help melt it, but they also pull more moisture into the concrete and add to the freeze-thaw cycle. One common result is surface scaling, which happens when water enters the concrete, freezes, and expands. The expansion creates pressure that can crack the surface and cause chips.

The pressure can also build inside the pores of the concrete. When pore water freezes, it can create a thermodynamic imbalance with the surrounding gel water, so more water moves in and freezes. Salt in the water can add osmotic pressure, which pushes even more water into the pores. In deeper parts of the concrete, D-cracking can form near edges and joints. These deep, D-shaped cracks show serious durability problems.

Concrete without air-entrained voids is most vulnerable to this kind of damage. Air-entrained voids are tiny spaces in the concrete that act like buffers and give freezing water room to expand. Without them, the expanding ice causes more cracks and can lead to spalling, where pieces of concrete break away and weaken the structure.
