Bone Structure

- [Instructeur] In het skeletstelsel kan de structuur van botweefsel worden geïllustreerd in een lang bot zoals het dijbeen, waar er twee soorten botweefsel zijn, namelijk compact en spongieus. Het compacte bot wordt bedekt door een membraan dat het periosteum wordt genoemd en dat bindweefsel, haarvaten en zenuwen bevat. De aangrenzende buitenste vaste laag die zich langs de diafyse, de schacht, bevindt, vormt een dicht beschermend omhulsel rond het medullaire kanaal, de holte waarin het gele beenmerg, dat voornamelijk uit vetcellen bestaat, wordt opgeslagen.

Deze ruimte is ook bedekt met een dun laagje, het endosteum, waarin botgroei, herinrichting en herstel plaatsvinden. Binnen de compacte laag bevinden zich osteonen, structurele eenheden in concentrische ringen, lamellen genaamd, die osteoblasten bevatten, cellen die cruciaal zijn voor de botvorming en -groei. Deze cellen rijpen uiteindelijk uit tot osteocyten in de holle ruimte van de lacune.

Door het centrum van elke osteon loopt het Haversiaanse kanaal dat nog meer bloed- en lymfevaten en zenuwvezels bevat. Richting de ronde uiteinden van het lange bot, de epifyse, bevindt zich het tweede type botweefsel dat bekend staat als spongieus bot. Deze binnenste laag bestaat uit een honingraatachtig netwerk van trabeculae, gegroepeerde rangschikkingen die zich vormen langs de scheidslijnen van stresspunten om met minimale massa de kracht te maximaliseren.

Tussen elke trabeculaire porie bevindt zich het rode beenmerg dat hematopoëtische stamcellen bevat die uitgroeien tot rode en witte bloedcellen en bloedplaatjes die uiteindelijk in de bloedsomloop en het lymfesysteem terechtkomen.

<h4>Corticaal bot</h4>

Het corticale of compacte bot bedekt een membraan dat het periosteum wordt genoemd en dat bindweefsel, haarvaten en zenuwen bevat. De buitenste, stevige laag – gevonden langs de diafyse, de schacht – vormt een dichte beschermende schil rond het mergkanaal – de holte waarin geel beenmerg is opgeslagen, dat voornamelijk uit vetcellen bestaat. Deze ruimte is ook bedekt met een dunne bekleding– het endosteum waarin botgroei, hermodellering en reparatie plaatsvinden.

Binnen de dichte laag corticaal bot bevinden zich osteonen – structurele eenheden, gerangschikt in concentrische ringen, lamellen genaamd, die osteoblasten – cellen bevatten die cruciaal zijn voor botvorming en groei. Inside a long bone, osseous tissue is organized into two main types: cortical bone and cancellous bone. A femur is a clear example of this structure. The bone also includes outer coverings and inner spaces that support growth, repair, and blood cell production.

Cortical bone, also called compact bone, forms the dense outer layer along the diaphysis, or shaft. It is covered by the periosteum, a membrane with connective tissue, capillaries, and nerves. Beneath the cortical layer is the medullary canal, a cavity that stores yellow bone marrow, which is made mainly of fat cells. This space is lined by the endosteum, where bone growth, remodeling, and repair take place.

Within cortical bone are osteons, the structural units of compact bone. Each osteon is arranged in concentric rings called lamellae and contains osteoblasts, which are important for bone formation and growth. As these cells mature, they become osteocytes in small spaces called lacunae. A Haversian canal runs through the center of each osteon and carries blood and lymphatic vessels, along with nerve fibers.

Toward the rounded ends of the long bone, or epiphyses, is cancellous bone, also called spongy bone. This inner layer has a honeycomb-like network of trabeculae that line up along stress points to give strength with less mass. The spaces between the trabeculae contain red bone marrow, which has hematopoietic stem cells that develop into red and white blood cells and platelets before entering the circulatory and lymphatic systems.
