- [Instructeur] Een motorische eenheid verwijst naar één motorneuron in het ruggenmerg en de populatie spiervezels die het innerveert. Terwijl elke skeletspiervezel door slechts één motorneuron wordt geïnnerveerd, kunnen de axonen van elk motorneuron zich vertakken in een aantal uiteinden, waardoor neuromusculaire knooppunten in de spier ontstaan. Als gevolg hiervan veroorzaakt de stimulatie van één enkele motorische eenheid een zwakke samentrekking van de hele spier.

Afhankelijk van de mate van controle die nodig is, kan het aantal vezels per eenheid variëren van enkele vezels in spieren die fijne bewegingen vereisen tot enkele honderden in minder precieze gewichtdragende spieren.

Motor Units

Een motoreenheid bestaat uit twee hoofdcomponenten: een enkel efferent motorneuron (dat wil zeggen een neuron dat impulsen wegvoert van het centrale zenuwstelsel) en alle spiervezels die het innerveert. Het motorneuron kan meerdere spiervezels innerveren, wat afzonderlijke cellen zijn, maar slechts één motorneuron innerveert één enkele spiervezel.

Lagere motorneuronen zijn efferente neuronen die de skeletspieren aansturen, het meest voorkomende type spier in het lichaam. De cellichamen van lagere motorneuronen bevinden zich in het ruggenmerg of de hersenstam. Die in de hersenstam zenden zenuwsignalen uit via de hersenzenuw en controleren voornamelijk de spieren in het hoofd en de nek. Lagere motorneuronen, afkomstig uit het ruggenmerg, sturen signalen langs de wervelkolomzenuw en controleren voornamelijk de spieren in de ledematen en de romp.

Een lager motorneuron vuurt een actiepotentiaal af dat in één keer alle skeletspiercellen samentrekt die door het neuron worden geïnnerveerd. Motoreenheden zijn dus functionele eenheden van skeletspieren.

De grootte van een motoreenheid, of het aantal spiervezels dat het lagere motorneuron innerveert, varieert afhankelijk van de grootte van de spier en de snelheid en precisie die de beweging vereist. Spieren in de ogen en vingers, die een snelle, nauwkeurige controle vereisen, worden over het algemeen aangestuurd door kleine motorische eenheden. In deze eenheden verbinden motorneuronen zich met een klein aantal spiervezels. De motoreenheden voor ledemaat- en rompbewegingen zijn daarentegen over het algemeen groot en bestaan uit veel spiervezels.

Motor units control skeletal muscle movement. A motor unit includes one efferent motor neuron, which carries signals away from the central nervous system, and all of the muscle fibers it innervates. A single motor neuron can connect with multiple muscle fibers, but each muscle fiber is innervated by only one motor neuron.

Lower motor neurons are the efferent neurons that control skeletal muscle, the most abundant type of muscle in the body. Their cell bodies are found in the spinal cord or brain stem. Neurons in the brain stem send signals through cranial nerves and mainly control muscles in the head and neck.

Lower motor neurons in the spinal cord send signals through spinal nerves. These neurons mainly control muscles in the limbs and body trunk. When a lower motor neuron fires an action potential, all of the skeletal muscle cells it innervates contract at the same time.

Motor units are the functional units of skeletal muscle. Their size depends on the size of the muscle and on how fast and precise the movement must be. Muscles in the eyes and fingers usually have small motor units for rapid, precise control, while motor units for limb and trunk movement are generally large and contain many muscle fibers.
