Threats to Biodiversity

- [Instructeur] Alhoewel de biodiversiteit gedurende de geologische tijd is veranderd en toegenomen en afgenomen is als gevolg van vijf grote massa-extincties in de loop van de geschiedenis van de aarde, kan het zesde massa-extinctieproces, dat bekend staat als de huidige holoceen-extinctie, worden toegeschreven aan menselijke activiteiten. De enorme toename van de menselijke populatie vormt de kern van het huidige biodiversiteitsverlies, met als gevolg verlies van leefgebieden, overexploitatie, de introductie van invasieve soorten en de wereldwijde klimaatverandering. De grote toename van de behoefte aan hulpbronnen voor menselijk voedsel en onderdak heeft voor veel soorten tot habitatverlies geleid.

Door ontbossing en omvorming van grond voor de landbouw worden soorten uit hun natuurlijke habitat geduwd tot kleinere en versnipperde woongebieden, met minder hulpbronnen en meer overlevingsproblemen. Veel soorten die voor voedsel en medicijnen worden gebruikt, worden overgeëxploiteerd, waardoor de soort niet meer in staat is zich te herstellen. Dit wordt veroorzaakt door een grote economische vraag die niet wordt bevredigd door de voortplantingscapaciteit van de soort.

Bovendien heeft de introductie van invasieve soorten geleid tot drastische veranderingen in de ecosystemen, waardoor inheemse soorten door predatie en concurrentie om hulpbronnen zijn verdwenen. Zonder natuurlijke vijanden veroorzaken invasieve soorten een snelle afname van de biodiversiteit. Ten slotte heeft de toename van de wereldwijde uitstoot van koolstofdioxide en andere broeikasgassen geleid tot een stapsgewijze stijging van de gemiddelde temperatuur op aarde.

Dit effect heeft de hoeveelheid bewoonbare ruimte voor veel soorten verminderd en heeft geleid tot een verandering in de migratie- en andere seizoensgebonden gedragspatronen.

Er zijn in de geologische geschiedenis vijf grote

uitstervingsgebeurtenissen geweest, die hebben geresulteerd in de eliminatie van de biodiversiteit, gevolgd door een herstel van soorten die zich hebben aangepast aan de nieuwe omstandigheden. In het huidige geologische tijdperk, het Holoceen, is er een zesde uitstervingsgebeurtenis aan de gang. Deze massale uitsterving wordt toegeschreven aan menselijke activiteiten en wordt daarom voorlopig het Antropoceen genoemd. In 2019 telde de menselijke bevolking 7,7 miljard mensen en er wordt verwacht dat ze in 2060 uit 10 miljard mensen zal bestaan. Een indicatie van onze impact is dat mensen, gemeten naar biomassa (de werkelijke massa van een bepaalde soort), 36% van de zoogdieren op aarde uitmaken, en vee 60%. en wilde zoogdieren slechts 4%. Ongeveer 70% van alle vogels is pluimvee, dus slechts 30% is wild.

Om de menselijke impact op de biodiversiteit en het klimaat te minimaliseren, moeten we begrijpen welke van onze activiteiten problematisch zijn en de behoeften van de menselijke beschaving en vooruitgang in evenwicht brengen met een duurzaam plan voor toekomstige generaties. Enkele van de grootste bedreigingen voor de biodiversiteit zijn onder meer het verlies van leefgebieden als gevolg van menselijke ontwikkeling, overbebouwing en de verhoogde uitstoot van kooldioxide door fabrieken en voertuigen.

<h4>Casestudies</h4>

Een casestudy over de menselijke invloed op het weer is te vinden in het evenement uit de jaren dertig dat bekend staat als de Dust Bowl. In de jaren twintig en dertig verhuisde een groot aantal boeren naar de Great Plains en kaapten het land weg, waarbij ze de inheemse bodembedekkende planten verwijderden om hun cultuurplanten te planten, die over het algemeen ondiepe wortelsystemen hebben. In een gebied rond Kansas en het noorden van Texas, dat zich noordwaarts uitstrekt tot in Canada en zuidwaarts door Texas, resulteerde een combinatie van extreme droogte en slecht doordachte landbouwpraktijken in stofstormen die puin helemaal tot aan de noordoostelijke staten afzetten. Uiteindelijk ontstond er, als gevolg van deze stormen en de depressieve economie die daar helaas mee samenviel, een algemeen voedseltekort en moesten veel gezinnen hun boerderijen verlaten. Het is duidelijk geworden dat als het land afzonderlijke plantensoorten wil ondersteunen die niet van nature zijn aangepast, boerderijen goed moeten worden gepland en rekening moeten worden gehouden met het verlies aan biodiversiteit.

Een minder radicaal voorbeeld is te zien in het Yellowstone National Park in de Verenigde Staten. De wolvenpopulaties namen radicaal af nadat de westwaartse migratie van de menselijke bevolking begon. Als gevolg hiervan nam de populatie prooidieren zoals de pronghorn en het muilezelhert toe. Omdat deze dieren de neiging hebben jonge jonge boompjes van Aspen te eten, resulteerde dit in een afname van het aantal Aspen-bomen. De stroomafwaartse effecten van dit verlies aan bomen zijn onder meer toegenomen landerosie en een verlies aan leefgebied voor vogels en andere dieren. Ondersteuning voor deze voorgestelde reeks gebeurtenissen komt van de recente herintroductie van wolven in Yellowstone, wat correleert met een waargenomen herstel van de Aspen-populatie in het park. Als deze correlatie er echt op wijst dat de Aspen nieuw leven is ingeblazen als gevolg van de herintroductie van wolven, versterkt dit onderzoek het algemene concept dat toproofdieren essentieel zijn voor de biodiversiteit van ecosystemen.

Het behoud van de biodiversiteit is essentieel om ecosystemen in evenwicht te houden, voorspelbare weerpatronen te verlengen en grondstoffen te behouden voor onderzoek naar nieuwe industriële en medische producten.

Human activity is changing biodiversity and pushing Earth toward a sixth extinction event. Earlier mass extinctions ended many species, and then new species spread into the changed environment. Today, the Holocene epoch is seeing a mass extinction linked to human actions, and it is often called the Anthropocene.

Human numbers and human biomass show how large this impact has become. In 2019, the human population reached 7.7 billion and is projected to rise to 10 billion by 2060. By biomass, humans make up about 36% of Earth’s mammals, livestock make up 60%, and wild mammals only 4%. About 70% of all birds are poultry, so only 30% are wild birds.

Several common activities threaten biodiversity. Habitat loss can happen when land is cleared for human development. Over-farming can also damage ecosystems. In addition, factories and vehicles release carbon dioxide, which adds to climate problems. To reduce these effects, people need to understand which activities cause harm and find a sustainable balance between human progress and the needs of future generations.

The Dust Bowl is one clear case of human impact on land and weather. In the 1920s and 1930s, many farmers moved to the Great Plains and clear cut the land. They removed native ground-cover plants so they could plant crops with shallow roots. Then extreme drought and poor farming practices combined to create dust storms that spread debris as far as the northeastern states. Food shortages followed, and many families had to leave their farms.

The Dust Bowl shows that farmland must be planned carefully if it is to support single crop species that are not naturally adapted to the area. A different example comes from Yellowstone National Park. After people moved west, wolf populations dropped sharply. Prey animals such as pronghorn and mule deer increased, and they ate young Aspen saplings. Aspen trees declined, which led to more erosion and less habitat for birds and other animals.

Wolves were later reintroduced to Yellowstone, and the Aspen population has since shown a rebound. If this pattern is truly caused by the return of wolves, it supports the idea that apex predators help keep ecosystems balanced. Biodiversity also matters because it helps preserve stable ecosystems, supports more predictable weather patterns, and keeps raw material available for new industrial and medical products.
