De studie van reactiemechanismen en kinetiek helpt onderzoekers om de reactiesnelheid te optimaliseren. Een verhoging van de temperatuur of concentratie zal de snelheid versnellen, maar kan ook leiden tot ontleding of bijproducten wanneer het te veel wordt verhoogd. Als alternatief kan een chemische stof die de reactiesnelheid versnelt zonder permanent te worden veranderd of verbruikt, aan het reactiemengsel worden toegevoegd.Deze stoffen worden katalysatoren genoemd en beïnvloeden de snelheidsconstante door de activeringsenergie te veranderen. Bedenk dat hoe hoger de activeringsenergie, hoe langzamer de reactiesnelheid. Daarom verlopen veel chemische reacties, zoals de ontleding van waterig waterstofperoxide, langzaam.De toevoeging van een katalysator verlaagt de activeringsenergie door een alternatief reactiemechanisme te bieden zonder de energietoestanden van reactanten en producten te beïnvloeden. Er zijn twee soorten katalysatoren:homogeen en heterogeen. Een homogene katalysator bestaat in dezelfde fase als de reactanten.Natriumbromide wordt bijvoorbeeld toegevoegd aan waterig waterstofperoxide om de ontleding ervan in gasvormige zuurstof en water te versnellen. Ten eerste reageren de bromide-ionen met waterstofperoxide in een zuur medium om een oranje oplossing van waterig broom en water te vormen. Vervolgens reageren waterig broom en waterstofperoxide en geven bromide-ionen af, aangegeven door een kleurloze oplossing.Kenmerkend voor een katalysator, versnellen bromide-ionen de reactie, maar blijven ongebruikt en verschijnen niet in de netto gebalanceerde vergelijking. Een heterogene katalysator bestaat in een andere fysische toestand dan de reactanten. Heterogene katalyse wordt gekenmerkt door vier onderliggende stappen:adsorptie, diffusie, reactie en desorptie.Zo wordt de hydrogeneringsreactie van onverzadigd etheengas tot ethaan versneld door fijn gedispergeerd palladium op houtskool. Hier bestaat de katalysator in zijn vaste toestand, terwijl reactanten in hun gasvormige vorm zijn. Tijdens deze heterogene katalyse adsorberen etheen-en waterstofmoleculen op het katalysatoroppervlak.De waterstof-waterstofbinding breekt waardoor de waterstofatomen kunnen diffunderen op het katalysatoroppervlak. Wanneer diffunderende waterstofatomen geadsorbeerde etheenmoleculen tegenkomen, reageren ze om verzadigd ethaan te vormen. Vervolgens desorberen de producten en bewegen ze weg van het metalen oppervlak, waarbij de intacte katalysator achterblijft.

De aanwezigheid van een katalysator beïnvloedt de snelheid van een chemische reactie. Een katalysator is een stof die de reactiesnelheid kan verhogen zonder dat deze tijdens het proces wordt verbruikt. Een basisbegrip van de rol van katalysatoren tijdens chemische reacties kan worden begrepen vanuit het concept van reactiemechanismen en energiediagrammen. <img alt="Image1" src="/files/ftp_upload/11383/11383_Image_1.png" style="text-align: center; height: 350px;"> De geïllustreerde afbeelding vertegenwoordigt de reactiediagrammen voor een endotherm chemisch proces dat verloopt in de afwezigheid (rode curve) en aanwezigheid (blauwe curve) van een katalysator. Beide curven vertegenwoordigen dezelfde algemene reactie: ze beginnen en eindigen bij dezelfde energieën. (In dit geval hebben producten meer energie dan reactanten. Daarom is de reactie endotherm). Hun reactiemechanismen zijn echter verschillend. De niet-gekatalyseerde reactie verloopt via een eenstapsmechanisme (met slechts één waargenomen overgangstoestand). Daarentegen volgt de gekatalyseerde reactie een tweestapsmechanisme (er worden twee overgangstoestanden waargenomen) met opmerkelijk minder activeringsenergie. Dit verschil in reactiewegen illustreert de rol van de katalysator bij het verschaffen van een alternatief reactiemechanisme met lagere activeringsenergie, waardoor reacties worden versneld. Het gekatalyseerde reactiemechanisme hoeft niet een groter aantal elementaire stappen te omvatten dan het niet-gekatalyseerde mechanisme. Het moet echter een alternatief reactiepad bieden waarvan de snelheidsbepalende stap sneller is (met een lagere Ea- of activeringsenergie). Een katalytische reactie kan worden gecategoriseerd als homogeen of heterogeen, gebaseerd op de fysieke toestand waarin katalysatoren en reactanten bestaan tijdens het katalytische proces. Homogene katalyse Bij homogene katalyse is de katalysator aanwezig in dezelfde fase als de reactanten: vast, vloeibaar of gas. Tijdens het proces treedt de katalysator in wisselwerking met de reactant om een tussenproduct te vormen, dat vervolgens in één of meer stappen ontleedt of reageert met een andere reactant om de oorspronkelijke katalysator te regenereren en het eindproduct te vormen. Een voorbeeld van homogene katalyse is het chemische proces waarbij ozon wordt afgebroken in de bovenste atmosfeer van de aarde. Ozon is een relatief onstabiel molecuul dat uiteenvalt en diatomaire zuurstof oplevert. Er wordt bijvoorbeeld aangenomen dat de door stikstofmonoxide gekatalyseerde afbraak van ozon plaatsvindt via het volgende driestapsmechanisme: <img alt="Eq2" src="/files/ftp_upload/11383/11383_Equation_2.png" style="text-align: center; height: 115px;"> De algehele reactie is echter hetzelfde voor zowel het tweestaps niet-gekatalyseerde mechanisme als het driestaps NO-gekatalyseerde mechanisme: <img alt="Eq3" src="/files/ftp_upload/11383/11383_Equation_3.png" style="text-align: center; height: 50px;"> Merk op dat NO bij de gekatalyseerde reactie een reactant is in de eerste stap van het mechanisme en een product in de laatste stap. Dit is een ander kenmerk van een katalysator: hoewel hij deelneemt aan de chemische reactie, wordt hij niet door de reactie verbruikt. Bovendien bestaan bij deze homogene katalyse zowel de reactant als de katalysator in een gasfase. Heterogene katalyse Bij heterogene katalyse is de katalysator aanwezig in een andere fase (meestal een vaste stof) dan de reactanten. Dergelijke katalysatoren functioneren in het algemeen door het verschaffen van een actief oppervlak waarop een reactie kan plaatsvinden. Gas- en vloeistoffasereacties gekatalyseerd door heterogene katalysatoren vinden plaats op het oppervlak van de katalysator in plaats van in de gas- of vloeistoffase. Catalysts change the rate of a chemical reaction by giving it a faster path. A catalyst increases reaction rate without being consumed during the process. Its effect is often explained with reaction mechanisms and energy diagrams.

For an endothermic reaction, the reactants and products start and end at the same energies in both cases. The uncatalyzed path is a one-step mechanism with one transition state. The catalyzed path follows a different mechanism with two transition states and a lower activation energy, or Ea. The lower rate-determining barrier is what makes the reaction faster.

Catalytic reactions are often grouped as homogeneous or heterogeneous. In homogeneous catalysis, the catalyst and reactants are in the same phase, which may be solid, liquid, or gas. The catalyst reacts with the reactant to form an intermediate, and that intermediate then breaks down or reacts again to form the product and regenerate the catalyst.

A good example of homogeneous catalysis is ozone decomposition in the upper atmosphere. Ozone breaks down to form diatomic oxygen, and nitric oxide can catalyze that process through a three-step mechanism. In this reaction, NO appears as a reactant in the first step and a product in the last step, which shows that it participates in the reaction but is not used up. Here, both the reactant and the catalyst are gases.

In heterogeneous catalysis, the catalyst is in a different phase from the reactants, usually a solid. These reactions happen on the catalyst surface. They typically include adsorption of reactants, activation on the surface, reaction of the adsorbed molecules, and desorption of the products.

The nickel-catalyzed reaction of ethene and hydrogen to form ethane shows this surface process. Hydrogen first adsorbs on nickel, and the H-H bond breaks to form nickel-hydrogen bonds. Ethene also adsorbs as its carbon-carbon pi bond breaks and nickel-carbon bonds form. Hydrogen atoms then move across the surface and make new carbon-hydrogen bonds, and the ethane product desorbs from the nickel surface.

Heterogeneous catalysts are important in industry. They help make ammonia, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and methanol. They are also used in catalytic converters in most gasoline-powered cars.
