Aromatic compounds are hydrocarbons with conjugated &#960; bonds enclosed in a ring. Benzene and its derivatives are the best-known examples of aromatic compounds.
Originally, benzene derivatives were isolated from natural oils produced by plants and trees and were called &#39;aromatic&#39; due to their distinctive odor.
For example, benzaldehyde from almonds and cherries, toluene from Tolu balsam, and eugenol from clove have distinct odors.
Over time, the term aromatic has continued to describe all benzene derivatives, irrespective of whether they are fragrant or not. For example, the pain reliever aspirin contains acetylsalicylic acid, an odorless aromatic compound.
Structurally, aromatic compounds are highly unsaturated hydrocarbons and exhibit different chemical behavior from alkenes, alkynes, and open-chain polyenes.
The primary sources of simple aromatic compounds are coal tar and petroleum.
Fractional distillation of coal tar yields many aromatic compounds such as benzene, toluene, xylene, naphthalene, and others.
Similarly, during petroleum refining, alkanes are converted to aromatic compounds.

Over het algemeen duidt de term ‘aromatisch’ op een aangename geur of geur van verse bloemen, vers bereide koffie, enz. In de vroege geschiedenis van de organische chemie werden veel benzeenderivaten geïsoleerd uit de aangename geuroliën van de planten. Vanilline werd bijvoorbeeld geïsoleerd uit de olie van vanille, methylsalicylaat uit de olie van wintergroen en kaneelaldehyde uit de olie van kaneel. Ze hadden allemaal een aangename geur; vandaar dat de naam aromatisch werd gegeven.

In 1825 isoleerde Faraday benzeen uit gecomprimeerd verlichtingsgas (de brandstof die in gaslampen werd verbrand) en noemde het ‘bicarburet van waterstof’. Hij voerde ook een elementanalyse van de verbinding uit en observeerde een verhouding van waterstof tot koolstof van 1:1.

Later synthetiseerde Eilhardt Mitscherlich benzeen uit benzoëzuur (geïsoleerd uit benzoëgom) en calciumoxide in 1834. Door metingen van de dampdichtheid uit te voeren, toonde hij aan dat de molecuulformule van benzeen C6H6 was. Omdat de nieuwe verbinding was afgeleid van benzoëgom, noemde hij het Benzin, nu bekend als benzeen. Het wordt gebruikt als laboratoriumoplosmiddel.

De term ‘aromatisch’ wordt nog steeds gebruikt om alle benzeenderivaten te beschrijven, of ze nu geurig zijn of niet. Veel van de natuurlijke en farmaceutische verbindingen zijn aromatisch. Oestron is bijvoorbeeld een steroïde, atorvastatine (Lipitor) is een cholesterolverlagend medicijn, Zoloft is een antidepressivum en Sereven wordt, gebruikt om astma te behandelen, zijn aromatische verbindingen.

Aromatische verbindingen worden voornamelijk verkregen uit steenkool en aardolie. Steenkool produceert koolteer wanneer het in afwezigheid van lucht tot 1000 °C wordt verwarmd. Koolteer produceert bij gefractioneerde destillatie veel aromatische koolwaterstoffen zoals benzeen, tolueen, dimethylbenzeen (xyleen), naftaleen, bifenyl, indeen, antraceen, enz.

Aromatische verbindingen kunnen echter niet rechtstreeks uit aardolie worden gewonnen. Tijdens de petroleumraffinage worden de alkanen in aanwezigheid van een katalysator bij 500 °C onder hoge druk omgezet in aromatische verbindingen.

Aromatic compounds are linked to both pleasant smells and important chemical structures. The word aromatic first came from fragrant natural sources such as fresh flowers and spices. Early organic chemists isolated benzene derivatives from oils of plants, including vanillin from vanilla, methyl salicylate from wintergreen, and cinnamaldehyde from cinnamon.

The history of benzene also helped shape the idea of aromatic compounds. In 1825, Faraday isolated benzene from compressed illuminating gas, which was used in gaslights. He called it bicarburet of hydrogen and found a 1:1 ratio of hydrogen to carbon. In 1834, Eilhardt Mitscherlich made benzene from benzoic acid, which comes from gum benzoin, and calcium oxide. He used vapor density measurements to show that benzene has the formula C6H6, and he named it Benzin, now called benzene.

Today, the term aromatic includes many benzene derivatives, even when they do not smell pleasant. Benzene itself is used as a laboratory solvent. Many natural and pharmaceutical compounds are aromatic, including estrone, atorvastatin (Lipitor), Zoloft, and Serevent.

Aromatic compounds are mainly obtained from coal and petroleum. When coal is heated to 1000 °C without air, it forms coal tar. Fractional distillation of coal tar gives aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylene, naphthalene, biphenyl, indene, and anthracene. Aromatic compounds are not taken directly from petroleum, but petroleum refining can convert alkanes into aromatic compounds with a catalyst at 500 °C under high pressure.
