Nomenclature of Aromatic Compounds with a Single Substituent

According to the IUPAC nomenclature, monosubstituted benzene derivatives are named by prefixing the substituent&#39;s name to the parent benzene.
IUPAC has also accepted common names for simple monosubstituted benzene derivatives. For example, toluene for methylbenzene and phenol for hydroxybenzene.
Benzene and its alkyl-substituted derivatives are often referred to as arenes. They are named depending on the size of the alkyl group.
If the alkyl group has six or fewer carbons, then the arene is termed an alkyl-substituted benzene.
Conversely, when the alkyl group has more than six carbons or consists of other functional groups, the benzene ring is treated as a substituent. And the arene is termed a phenyl-substituted compound.
The name phenyl, abbreviated as Ph&#8211;, represents the C6H5 group of benzene as a substituent, such as in 2-phenylheptane.
Similarly, benzyl, abbreviated as Bn&#8211;, represents the phenylmethyl group as a substituent, such as in benzyl chloride.
Aryl, abbreviated as Ar&#8211;, is the substituent derived from an arene after the removal of a hydrogen atom from the aromatic ring.

Benzeen is de eenvoudigste aromatische koolwaterstof of areen. De IUPAC-namen voor eenvoudige monogesubstitueerde benzeenderivaten worden afgeleid door de naam van de substituent als voorvoegsel toe te voegen aan het oorspronkelijke benzeen. Bijvoorbeeld halobenzeen, waarbij het halogeen fluor (F), chloor (Cl), broom (Br) en jood (I) zou kunnen zijn.

 De naamgeving van aromatische verbindingen hangt ook af van de ketenlengte van de alkylgroep die aan de benzeenring is bevestigd. Als de alkylketen zes of minder koolstofatomen heeft, wordt de verbinding alkyl-gesubstitueerd benzeen genoemd. Bijvoorbeeld propylbenzeen, waarbij de alkylgroep drie koolstofatomen heeft.

 Als de alkylketen echter meer dan zes koolstofatomen heeft of andere preferentiële functionele groepen bevat, wordt de verbinding een fenyl-gesubstitueerd derivaat genoemd. De uit benzeen verkregen substituent wordt fenyl (Ph-) genoemd, terwijl de uit tolueen afgeleide substituent benzyl (Bn-) groepen is.  Over het algemeen worden de substituenten afgeleid van arenen door verlies van waterstof arylen genoemd. Sommige van de eenvoudige monogesubstitueerde benzeenderivaten hebben algemene namen gekregen die door de IUPAC-nomenclatuur worden geaccepteerd. Vinylbenzeen is bijvoorbeeld styreen en isopropylbenzeen is cumeen. Benzaldehyde en benzoëzuur zijn andere voorbeelden.

Benzene derivatives with one substituent are named by attaching the substituent name to benzene. Benzene is the simplest aromatic hydrocarbon, also called an arene. For simple monosubstituted benzene compounds, IUPAC naming uses the group name as a prefix.

Halogen-substituted benzene compounds follow this pattern. The halogen prefix can be fluoro, chloro, bromo, or iodo. When an alkyl group is attached to the benzene ring, the name depends on the chain length of that group.

If the alkyl chain has six or fewer carbons, the compound is named as an alkyl-substituted benzene. Propylbenzene is one example, and its alkyl group has three carbons. If the alkyl chain has more than six carbons, or if another preferred functional group is present, the compound is named as a phenyl-substituted derivative.

The benzene-derived substituent is called phenyl, written as Ph-. The group derived from toluene is called benzyl, written as Bn-. Examples include 1-phenylheptane, 1-phenyl-1-pentanone, diphenyl ether, and benzyl bromide. In general, substituents formed from arenes by loss of hydrogen are called aryl groups. Some simple monosubstituted benzene derivatives also have common names accepted by IUPAC, including styrene for vinylbenzene, cumene for isopropylbenzene, benzaldehyde, and benzoic acid.

Five-membered aromatic rings with heteroatoms are cyclic compounds that contain one or more atoms other than carbon in the ring. They are aromatic and can have either five or six atoms in the ring.
