Cyclic aromatic compounds having one or more heteroatoms are termed heterocyclic aromatic compounds.
Five-membered heterocyclic aromatic compounds include pyrrole, furan, thiophene, and imidazole, having nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur as heteroatoms.
In these planar compounds, all atoms are sp2 hybridized, including the heteroatom.
As evident from the &#960; bonding structure of pyrrole, one &#960; electron from each carbon and one lone pair of electrons from the heteroatom occupy the unhybridized 2p orbitals.
These five orbitals overlap, forming a closed-loop of 6 &#960; electrons, making pyrrole aromatic.
In furan and thiophene, the additional lone pairs of electrons occupy an sp2 hybrid orbital and are not&#160; part of the &#960; &#160;system.
Imidazole has two nitrogen atoms. The lone pair on one of the nitrogens is part of the aromatic sextet. The lone pair on the second nitrogen occupies an sp2 hybrid orbital and is not involved in the &#960; system.

Heterocyclische aromatische verbindingen zijn cyclische verbindingen die aromatisch zijn en één of meer heteroatomen (andere atomen dan koolstof) in de ring hebben. Afhankelijk van het aantal atomen dat in de ring aanwezig is, kunnen ze vijf- of zesledig zijn. Voorbeelden van vijfledige heterocyclische aromatische verbindingen omvatten pyrrool, furan, thiofeen en imidazool. Pyrrool bestaat uit één stikstofatoom met één aleenstaande elektronenpaar. Furan en thiofeen hebben respectievelijk één zuurstof- en één zwavel-heteroatoom. Beide bezitten twee alleenstaande elektronenparen. Imidazool verschilt van de andere drie doordat het twee stikstofatomen als heteroatomen heeft met één alleenstaande elektronenpaar op elk stikstofatoom. In alle vier de heterocyclische verbindingen zijn alle atomen sp2-gehybridiseerd, inclusief de heteroatomen.


 Hierdoor hebben alle atomen één ongehybridiseerde p -orbitaal loodrecht op het ringvlak. In elk geval dragen alle koolstofatomen één π-elektron bij, en heteroatomen dragen één alleenstaande elektronenpaar bij, dat de ongehybridiseerde p -orbitaal bezet. Hiermee is het aromatische sextet voltooid en ontstaat een gesloten lus van 6 π -elektronen.


 Het extra alleenstaande elektronenpaar zuurstof- en zwavel-heteroatoom in respectievelijk furaan en thiofeen bezet de sp2-hybride orbitaal, die loodrecht op de p -orbitaal ligt, en neemt niet deel aan het π-systeem. In het geval van imidazool bezet het alleenstaande elektronenpaar op het tweede stikstofatoom de sp2-hybride orbitaal en neemt het niet deel aan het aromatische π-systeem. Daarom is het alleenstaande elektronenpaar van slechts één stikstofatoom betrokken bij het aromatische sextet.

Five-membered aromatic rings with heteroatoms are cyclic compounds that contain one or more atoms other than carbon in the ring. They are aromatic and can have either five or six atoms in the ring. Common examples include pyrrole, furan, thiophene, and imidazole.

These rings differ by the heteroatom present. Pyrrole has one nitrogen atom with one lone pair of electrons. Furan has one oxygen atom, and thiophene has one sulfur atom. Both furan and thiophene have two lone pairs of electrons. Imidazole has two nitrogen atoms, and each nitrogen has one lone pair of electrons.

In these compounds, the ring atoms are sp2 hybridized, including the heteroatoms. That means each atom has one unhybridized p orbital standing perpendicular to the ring plane. The carbon atoms each contribute one pi electron. The heteroatoms contribute one lone pair from the p orbital, which helps complete the aromatic sextet and forms a closed loop of 6 pi electrons.

Not every lone pair takes part in aromaticity. In furan and thiophene, the extra lone pair on oxygen or sulfur stays in an sp2 hybrid orbital and does not join the pi system. In imidazole, the lone pair on the second nitrogen also stays in an sp2 hybrid orbital. As a result, only one nitrogen lone pair is part of the aromatic sextet.
