Position and Displacement

To describe an object&#39;s motion, its position needs to be specified relative to a convenient frame of reference. An arbitrary set of axes that describes an object&#39;s position and motion is known as a frame of reference.
Generally, Earth or stationary objects on Earth are used as frames of reference. For example, an airplane&#39;s position during its takeoff could be described with respect to Earth as a whole or the airport&#39;s control tower. To describe an object&#39;s position along a one-dimensional motion, we often use the variable x.
Now, suppose an object moves relative to a frame of reference&#8212;for example, a car moves to the left relative to a building, then the car&#39;s position changes. This change in position is called displacement.
However, the numerical value of x along a straight line defines an object&#39;s position where it might be located. Any change in position along this line is indicated by displacement, where &#916;x is displacement and is calculated by subtracting the initial position from the final position. It is a vector quantity since it indicates direction, and, depending on the choice of positive direction, it can be either positive or negative.

In andere gevallen gebruiken we referentiekaders die niet stilstaand zijn, maar zich bewegen ten opzichte van de aarde. Om bijvoorbeeld de positie van een persoon in een vliegtuig te beschrijven, gebruiken we het vliegtuig als referentiekader, en niet de aarde.

Om de positie van een object dat een ééndimensionale beweging ondergaat te beschrijven, gebruiken we vaak de variabele x.

Als een object beweegt ten opzichte van een referentiekader, dan verandert de positie van het object. Bijvoorbeeld, als een docent naar rechts beweegt ten opzichte van een whiteboard, dan is de positie van de docent veranderd. Deze verandering in positie wordt verplaatsing genoemd. Het woord verplaatsing impliceert dat een object is bewogen of verplaatst.

Hoewel positie de numerieke waarde van x langs een rechte lijn is waar een object zich bevindt, geeft verplaatsing de verandering in positie langs deze lijn weer. Omdat verplaatsing een richting aangeeft, is het een vectoriële grootheid en kan deze positief of negatief zijn, afhankelijk van welke richting als positief wordt gekozen.

Een bewegingsanalyse kan meerdere verplaatsingen bevatten. Bijvoorbeeld, als rechts positief is, en een object beweegt 2 m naar rechts en vervolgens 4 m naar links, dan zijn de individuele verplaatsingen 2 m en −4 m, respectievelijk.

Position in straight-line motion depends on a frame of reference. A frame of reference is an arbitrary set of axes used to describe an object’s position and motion. It gives meaning to where something is located at a particular time.

Earth is often used as the reference frame. In that case, we describe an object’s position relative to stationary objects on Earth. A rocket launch can be described this way. A cyclist’s position can also be described relative to the buildings they pass.

Sometimes the reference frame is moving. For example, a person on an airplane is described using the airplane as the reference frame, not Earth. For one-dimensional motion, the position is often written with the variable x. If an object moves relative to its reference frame, its position changes.

That change in position is called displacement. Displacement means the object has moved or been displaced. It is different from position because it shows the change along the line, not just the location.

Displacement is a vector quantity, so direction matters. It can be positive or negative, depending on which direction is chosen as positive. If right is positive, then a move of 2 m to the right is positive, and a move of 4 m to the left is negative 4 m. Displacement is written as Δx, and it is found by subtracting the initial position from the final position.
