Sound Waves: Interference

Interference is a process by virtue of which two or more sound waves interact with each other simultaneously and produce a new resultant wave.
If two sound waves having the same phase and frequency superimpose on each other, their amplitudes are reinforced, and thus resulting in constructive interference.
On the other hand, if two sound waves of the same amplitude are out of phase by 180&#176; and superimpose on each other, it leads to destructive interference, resulting in complete annulment.
Nowadays, the concept of destructive interference is used in headphones with active noise cancellation, where a second sound is introduced with its maxima and minima completely reversed from the incoming noise.

Als het verschil in de padlengten één golflengte bedraagt, leidt dit tot totale constructieve interferentie en een resulterende amplitude gelijk aan tweemaal de oorspronkelijke amplitude. Als het verschil in de padlengten kleiner is dan één golflengte maar groter dan een halve golflengte, resulteert dit in een amplitude groter dan nul en minder dan tweemaal de oorspronkelijke amplitude. Als het verschil in padlengte ten slotte een halve golflengte bedraagt, leidt dit tot totale destructieve interferentie en een resulterende amplitude gelijk aan nul. Een slimme toepassing van interferentie in alledaagse situaties is te zien in een hoofdtelefoon. De laatste tijd zijn hoofdtelefoons ontworpen om ruis met destructieve interferentie te onderdrukken door een geluidsgolf te creëren die tegenovergesteld is aan het binnenkomende geluid. Deze hoofdtelefoons kunnen effectiever zijn dan de eenvoudige passieve demping die bij de meeste vormen van gehoorbescherming wordt gebruikt. Sound wave interference can change the loudness of sound when two waves meet. Sound waves may be modeled as longitudinal waves, where molecules move around an equilibrium position, or as pressure waves. When two identical waves from the same source overlap, their crests or troughs can add together. This is called constructive interference, and it increases amplitude.

If identical waves start in phase but travel different path lengths, they can become out of phase. Then a crest can meet a trough, which causes destructive interference and lowers the amplitude. When the waves are 180° out of phase, the cancellation can be complete. The path length difference determines how strong the combined wave will be.

Two speakers driven by a single signal generator show this effect clearly. Their sound waves are in phase and have a single frequency, so they interfere with one another. When two crests or two troughs line up, the result is constructive interference. When a trough lines up with a crest, destructive interference occurs.

The size of the path length difference matters. A difference of one wavelength gives total constructive interference, with an amplitude twice the original. A difference of less than one wavelength but more than half a wavelength gives an amplitude greater than zero but less than twice the original. A difference of half a wavelength gives total destructive interference and an amplitude of zero.

Interference also has a real-world use in headphones. Some headphones use destructive interference to cancel noise by producing a wave opposite the incoming sound. These headphones can work better than the passive attenuation used in most ear protection. Pilots on the Voyager aircraft use this kind of headphone to protect their ears from engine noise.

Sound travels through matter as pressure changes in a medium. These changes make the particles of the medium move back and forth around their mean position.
