Nomenclature of Aromatic Compounds with Multiple Substituents

The IUPAC nomenclature of aromatic compounds with multiple substituents depends on the number and position of the substituents.
To name the disubstituted benzene derivatives, the substituent&#39;s positions are indicated either by using the prefixes ortho, meta, and para, abbreviated as o, m, and p, respectively, or using numbers like 1,2- for ortho, 1,3- for meta, and 1,4- for para. 
If the two substituents are different, they are numbered and listed alphabetically.
When one of the substituents imparts a common name to the compound, the compound is named as a derivative of that parent molecule.
To name polysubstituted benzene derivatives with more than two substituents, numbers are used to indicate the positions of substituents.
The substituents are given the lowest possible numbers and are listed alphabetically.
If any substituent imparts a common name, it is assigned locant one, and the compound is named as the derivative of that parent molecule.

Wanneer er meer dan één substituent aanwezig is op de benzeenring, hangt de IUPAC-nomenclatuur af van het aantal aanwezige substituenten.


 Voor digesubstitueerde benzeenderivaten, met twee groepen aan de benzeenring, zijn drie constitutionele isomeren mogelijk. Neem bijvoorbeeld dimethylbenzeen, vaak xyleen genoemd, waarbij de tweede methylgroep kan worden gesubstitueerd op het tweede, derde of vierde koolstofatoom. De relatieve positie van de substituenten wordt weergegeven door de voorvoegsels ortho, meta of para. Deze termen kunnen ook met een enkele letter worden weergegeven; ortho als 'o', meta als 'm' en para als 'p'. Getallen kunnen ook worden gebruikt om de relatieve positie van de gekoppelde groepen aan te geven, zoals 1,2- voor ortho, 1,3- voor meta en 1,4- voor para. Hieronder worden bijvoorbeeld de drie verschillende structuren weergegeven die mogelijk zijn voor dimethylbenzeen.

 Polygesubstitueerde benzeenderivaten hebben drie of meer substituenten die aan de benzeenring zijn bevestigd. Om ze een naam te geven, worden cijfers gebruikt om de relatieve posities van aangesloten groepen aan te geven, en worden aan elke groep de laagst mogelijke nummers toegewezen, zoals hieronder weergegeven.

Naming benzene rings with multiple groups depends on how many substituents are attached. For benzene derivatives with two groups, three constitutional isomers are possible. The position of each group is described with IUPAC naming rules.

For disubstituted benzene compounds, the relative positions can be shown with ortho, meta, and para. These terms are also written as o, m, and p. They can also be written with numbers, such as 1,2- for ortho, 1,3- for meta, and 1,4- for para. Dimethyl benzene, also called xylene, is a common example of this pattern because the second methyl group can attach at the second, third, or fourth carbon.

When the two substituents are different, they are numbered and listed in alphabetical order before benzene. If one substituent belongs to a common name, the compound is named as a derivative of that parent compound. For polysubstituted benzene derivatives, which have three or more substituents, numbers show the positions of the attached groups, and the lowest possible numbers are assigned to each group. The substituents are then listed in alphabetical order, and if a common name is present, it gets locant 1 and the molecule is named as a derivative of that parent compound.

Five-membered aromatic rings with heteroatoms are cyclic compounds that contain one or more atoms other than carbon in the ring. They are aromatic and can have either five or six atoms in the ring.
