Based on the mechanism, organic reactions can be broadly classified as ionic, radical, and pericyclic. While ionic and radical reactions have well-defined intermediates, pericyclic reactions proceed without any intermediates.
There are three classes of pericyclic reactions: electrocyclic reactions, cycloaddition reactions, and sigmatropic rearrangements.
In an electrocyclic reaction, the ends of a conjugated &#960; system join to form a new &#963; bond, resulting in a cyclic product with one &#960; bond less than the reactant.
In cycloaddition reactions, two different &#960; systems interact to form a ring, with two &#960; bonds of the reactants, transforming into two new &#963; bonds.
A sigmatropic rearrangement involves the net movement of a &#963; bond from one position to another.
Unlike ionic or radical reactions, pericyclic reactions are concerted, involving a flow of electrons in a circular path leading to a cyclic transition state.
Lastly, they are thermally or photochemically activated, and show high stereospecificity.

Pericyclische reacties zijn organische reacties die plaatsvinden via een gecoördineerd mechanisme zonder tussenproducten te genereren. De reacties verlopen via de beweging van elektronen in een gesloten lus en vormen een cyclische overgangstoestand, waarbij herschikking van de σ en πbindingen specifieke producten oplevert.


 Pericyclische reacties kunnen in drie categorieën worden ingedeeld: elektrocyclische reacties, cycloadditiereacties en sigmatrope herschikkingen. Elektrocyclische reacties en sigmatrope herschikkingen zijn intramoleculaire reacties, terwijl cycloadditiereacties intermoleculaire processen zijn. De subklassen kunnen worden onderscheiden op basis van het aantal en het type bindingen dat tijdens de reactie wordt verbroken en gevormd.


 Elektrocyclische reactie: één πbinding wordt verbroken in de reactant om een σbinding in het product te vormen.

Pericyclic reactions are organic reactions that happen through a concerted mechanism, which means they proceed in one step without intermediates. Electrons move in a closed loop to form a cyclic transition state. In that transition state, the sigma and pi bonds rearrange to give specific products.

These reactions are grouped into three classes: electrocyclic reactions, cycloaddition reactions, and sigmatropic rearrangements. Electrocyclic reactions and sigmatropic rearrangements occur within one molecule, so they are intramolecular. Cycloaddition reactions involve two reacting molecules, so they are intermolecular.

The three subclasses differ by the bonds that are broken and formed. In an electrocyclic reaction, one pi bond is broken in the reactant and one sigma bond is formed in the product. In a cycloaddition reaction, two pi bonds are broken and two sigma bonds are formed. In a sigmatropic rearrangement, no pi bond is broken. Instead, a sigma bond migrates while nearby pi bonds are rearranged.

Pericyclic reactions also have several key features. Solvent polarity does not affect the reaction rate, and catalysts are not required. They can be activated by heat or light. The product configuration depends on the number of electrons taking part in the reaction, which is linked to the number of conjugated double bonds. These reactions are stereospecific, and that behavior can be explained by the pi molecular orbital symmetries of the reactants and products.
