Randomized Experiments

Randomization is a statistical method of randomly assigning participants to an experiment or control group, assuming each participant has a fair chance of being selected.
Randomization helps to prevent bias, which may arise during subject selection, or accidental errors during and after the experiment.
The simple randomization method divides the samples into two groups by flipping a coin or rolling a die.
However, characteristics of the sample, such as gender, may affect the outcomes and act as a blocking variable. In such cases, block randomization is used, which separates the samples into blocks based on gender. Depending on the treatment group, individuals in each block are divided randomly into smaller groups.
In stratified randomization, prognostic variables such as gender and body mass index are grouped and balanced. With these two covariates, six combinations or strata are possible. The individuals within these strata are then randomly assigned to a treatment or control group.

Eenvoudige randomisatie

Eenvoudige randomisatie verwijst naar willekeurige toewijzing op basis van één enkele reeks. De toewijzing van een persoon aan een groep blijft volledig willekeurig. Het opgooien van een munt is de meest gangbare en primaire methode voor eenvoudige randomisatie.

Blokrandomisatie

Bij blokrandomisatie worden deelnemers willekeurig toegewezen aan verschillende groepen om een gelijke steekproefgrootte per groep te verkrijgen. Deze methode zorgt ervoor dat de steekproefomvang in de loop van de tijd in balans blijft over de groepen. Elk blok is klein en in evenwicht, met vooraf bepaalde groepsindelingen, zodat het aantal deelnemers in elke groep altijd gelijk blijft.

Gestratificeerde randomisatie

Bij gestratificeerde randomisatie worden covariaten gecontroleerd en in balans gebracht. Deze methode zorgt ervoor dat de basiskenmerken (covariaten) van de deelnemers evenredig verdeeld zijn over de groepen. Om de invloed van een covariaat op een afhankelijke variabele te schatten, moet de onderzoeker specifieke covariaten identificeren. Deelnemers worden toegewezen aan het juiste covariaatblok op basis van gestratificeerde randomisatie, waardoor afzonderlijke blokken ontstaan voor elke combinatie van covariaten. Zodra de deelnemers zijn geïdentificeerd en in blokken zijn verdeeld, wordt eenvoudige randomisatie toegepast om hen toe te wijzen aan een van de groepen binnen elk blok.

Random assignment helps researchers place participants into experimental and control groups. It gives each person an equal chance of being assigned to either group. This process is used to reduce selection bias and to balance known and unknown confounding factors, so the control group is as similar to the treatment group as possible.

A computer program or a random number generator can make the assignment process less biased. Simple randomization is the most direct method. It uses a single random sequence, and each person stays completely random in the group assignment. Flipping a coin is the most common example of simple randomization.

Block randomization is used when researchers want equal sample sizes across groups over time. It randomly assigns participants in small, balanced blocks. Each block has predetermined group assignments, so the number of participants in each group stays similar as the study continues.

Stratified randomization keeps baseline characteristics, or covariates, balanced between groups. Researchers first identify the specific covariates they want to control. They then place participants into separate blocks for each combination of covariates. After that, simple randomization is used within each block to assign participants to one of the groups.
