Skin Diseases and Disorders

The skin is the protective barrier that safeguards the body from the harsh external environment.
However, scrapes, injuries, and microbial infections on the skin can cause a variety of skin diseases that may result in significant changes in skin color and morphology.
Bacterial infestation on an injury or surgical wound can cause cellulitis - inflammation of the dermis and subcutaneous tissues.
Ringworm, a fungal infection, develops as itchy, red circular patches on the skin. Small skin growths known as warts are caused by the human papillomavirus.
Moreover, the skin can also be affected by autoimmune disorders.
Scleroderma is an autoimmune connective tissue disorder characterized by abnormal skin thickening due to collagen overproduction.
In alopecia areata, the immune cells attack hair follicles, forming bald patches on the scalp.
Psoriasis, another autoimmune condition, is characterized by red, raised epidermal patches seen as rashes with silvery scales that itch or bleed.
Vitiligo, a chronic autoimmune condition that affects melanocytes, manifests as patches of pale skin.

Skin is the first line of defense and encounters a variety of microbes. Some pathogenic strains are often the cause of a broad range of infections of the skin and other body systems. These conditions can affect people of all ages and may have different causes, including genetic factors, infections, autoimmune reactions, environmental factors, and lifestyle choices.
Gram-positive Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. are responsible for many of the most common skin infections. However, many skin conditions are not strictly associated with a single pathogen. Opportunistic pathogens of many types may infect skin wounds, and individual cases with identical symptoms may result from different pathogens or combinations of pathogens.
Bacteria like S. aureus are contagious and spread quickly through skin-to-skin contact. S. aureus is often associated with pyoderma, skin infections that are purulent. Pus formation occurs because many strains of S. aureus produce leukocidins, which kill white blood cells. These purulent skin infections may initially manifest as folliculitis but can lead to furuncles or deeper abscesses called carbuncles.
Impetigo, another bacterial infection, causes the formation of vesicles, pustules, and possibly bullae, often around the nose and mouth. Bullae are large, fluid-filled blisters that measure at least 5 mm in diameter. Impetigo can be diagnosed as either nonbullous or bullous. In nonbullous impetigo, cysts and pustules rupture and become encrusted sores.
Viral skin infections by human papillomavirus (HPV) are transmitted by direct contact leading to Papillomas (warts). There are many types of HPV, leading to various presentations, such as common warts, plantar warts, flat warts, and filiform warts.
Fungal infections, also called mycoses, can be divided into classes based on invasiveness. Mycoses that cause superficial infections of the epidermis, hair, and nails are called cutaneous mycoses. Mycoses that penetrate the epidermis and the dermis to infect deeper tissues are called subcutaneous mycoses. Mycoses that spread throughout the body are called systemic mycoses. A group of cutaneous mycoses called tineas is caused by dermatophytes and fungal molds that require keratin, a protein found in skin, hair, and nails, for growth. There are three genera of dermatophytes, all of which can cause cutaneous mycoses: Trichophyton, Epidermophyton, and Microsporum.

Skin infections often start when microbes affect the body’s first line of defense. Many skin conditions can affect people of all ages. They may come from genetic factors, infections, autoimmune reactions, environmental factors, or lifestyle choices.

Many of the most common skin infections are caused by gram-positive Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. However, many skin problems are not linked to just one pathogen. Opportunistic pathogens can infect skin wounds, and similar symptoms may come from different pathogens or from a mix of pathogens.

Staphylococcus aureus is contagious and can spread quickly through skin-to-skin contact. It is often linked to pyoderma, which is a purulent, or pus-forming, skin infection. Pus can form because many strains of S. aureus make leukocidins, which kill white blood cells. These infections may begin as folliculitis, then develop into furuncles or deeper abscesses called carbuncles.

Impetigo is another bacterial skin infection. It can cause vesicles, pustules, and sometimes bullae, which are large fluid-filled blisters at least 5 mm wide. Impetigo can be classified as nonbullous or bullous. In nonbullous impetigo, cysts and pustules rupture and leave crusted sores, often around the nose and mouth.

Viral skin infections can be caused by human papillomavirus, or HPV, and spread by direct contact. These infections lead to papillomas, better known as warts. HPV can cause several forms, including common warts, plantar warts, flat warts, and filiform warts.

Fungal skin infections are called mycoses, and they are grouped by how deeply they spread. Cutaneous mycoses affect the epidermis, hair, and nails. Subcutaneous mycoses penetrate the epidermis and dermis to reach deeper tissue, and systemic mycoses spread throughout the body. A group of cutaneous mycoses called tineas is caused by dermatophytes and fungal molds that need keratin, a protein in skin, hair, and nails, to grow. The main dermatophyte genera are Trichophyton, Epidermophyton, and Microsporum.

Content elaboration: The integumentary system consists of skin and accessory structures. The skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis (subcutaneous layer). The accessory structures can include sweat glands, sebaceous glands, arrector pili muscles, hair follicles and nails. Skin functions include protection, temperature regulation, excretion and sensory perception. These occur through the processes of perspiration, skin production and shedding, vitamin D synthesis and repair. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, burns, skin cancer, anhidrosis, acne, eczema or scleroderma. Investigations are used to understand and explain the integumentary system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.

Content elaboration: The skeletal system is composed of bones, cartilage, joints and ligaments. Bones make up most of the skeleton. There are four main cell types that compose bone tissue, each with a specific function: osteogenic cells, osteocytes, osteoblasts and osteoclasts. The microscopic anatomy of compact bone includes osteons. Bones are classified by their shape. The structure of a typical long bone can be explored. Specific bones of the skeleton can be studied by their subdivisions: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. Cartilage is found in areas of the nose, ears, ribs and joints. Joints can be classified by structure or by function. The general structure of synovial joints may be explored. Ligaments connect bone to bone, stabilizing joints. The skeletal system provides support for the human body, protects soft organs, allows for movement due to attachment of muscles, stores minerals and fat and forms blood cells. Processes of the skeletal system include hematopoiesis, ossification and bone growth and remodeling. A comparison of male to female, juvenile to adult or human to other vertebrate skeletons may be explored. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, osteoporosis, malnutrition, fractures, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and arthritis. Investigations are used to understand and explain the skeletal system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
