In mechanics, a coplanar force system experiences different types of reactions between the point of contact and the supports.
The support prevents the translational motion of the system by applying an equal and opposite force. It also prevents the rotation of the system by applying a couple of moments in the opposite direction.
Roller support allows the structure to translate in only one direction. The reaction at the roller support will be a single force acting normal to the support.
A pin support allows only the rotation of the beam, restricting its translational motion. It produces a reaction to the applied force in the plane perpendicular to the axis of the pin. This force can be resolved into its rectangular components.
Fixed support restrains the structure from translating and rotating in any direction by providing two reaction forces and a moment to any applied force. The force Fx acts in the horizontal direction along the axis of the support, while Fy acts normal to the support.

Types of structural supports control how a coplanar force system moves and reacts under load. A coplanar force system is a set of forces that all lie in the same plane. The supports create reactions at the point of contact. These reactions help keep a structure stable under external forces.

Supports work by stopping translation with an equal and opposite force. They can also stop rotation by applying a couple moment in the opposite direction. In structural design, these reactions are important for safe and reliable systems. They help structures resist loads without unwanted motion.

There are three main support types: roller support, pin support, and fixed support. A roller support allows translation in only one direction. It provides a single reaction force normal to its surface. This support is useful where movement must still happen in a controlled way, such as in bridges that expand or contract with temperature changes.

A pin support provides a reaction force in the plane perpendicular to its axis when force is applied. It permits rotation but restricts translational motion.
