Echo

Sound waves get reflected when they hit the interface between two mediums.
Imagine standing on one end of a long hallway of length L and emitting a sound wave. The reflected wave takes some time to return to the source, given by the total distance traveled and the speed of sound.
Human ears can distinguish between two sources of sound if they are separated by a time gap greater than one-tenth of a second.
The emitted and reflected waves are perceived as distinct sound waves if the time difference exceeds the distinction time. This phenomenon is called an echo.
By equating the two sides and substituting the speed of sound in ambient air at twenty degrees Celsius, the minimum distance to hear an echo is obtained.
Conversely, if the time difference between the emitted and reflected waves is known, the distance between the source and the reflector can be calculated. Ships use this technique to measure the distance of various objects on the ocean floor.

Als het tijdsverschil tussen de uitgezonden en gereflecteerde geluidsgolven nauwkeurig kan worden gemeten, kan ook de afstand tussen de zender en de reflector worden berekend. In de dierenwereld gebruiken vleermuizen deze techniek om prooien te lokaliseren.

Echo is a reflected sound that returns after the original sound has been heard. The human ear cannot tell two sounds apart if they arrive within about 0.1 seconds of each other. When the reflected sound takes longer than that to return, the ear hears two separate sounds instead of one.

This effect is easy to notice when the sound source is close to a surface that sends the sound back. If the sound and its reflection are separated by enough time, the result is an echo. A minimum distance of about 16.5 meters is needed to hear an echo, so long hallways or distant cliffs can produce it.

The time delay can also be used to measure distance. If the gap between the original sound wave and the reflected sound wave is measured precisely, the distance between the sound source and the reflector can be calculated. Bats use the same idea in the animal world to locate prey.
