Work Done by Many Forces

Consider a baggage tractor pulling a baggage cart with a force of 10,000 N &#160;at an angle of 30 degrees. If the cart offers a friction of 2,000 N while being towed, what is the work done on the cart to displace it by 10 m in a straight line?
A free-body diagram is drawn to get a clear understanding of the forces.
The forces perpendicular to the motion of the cart do not cause displacement of the cart, so no work is done by those forces.&#160;&#160;
The forces in the x-direction are the component of the pulling force and the frictional force, which are summed vectorially.
The total work done is the resultant force along the displacement times the displacement.
Alternatively, the work done by each force can be first calculated and then summed.
The work done by the perpendicular forces is zero. The pulling force and the frictional force are not perpendicular to the displacement and so contribute to the total work.&#160;

Bij de tweede methode wordt de nettokracht eerst berekend door een vectorsom van alle krachten. Vervolgens wordt de door deze kracht verrichte arbeid verkregen. Aangezien krachten loodrecht op de verplaatsing geen werk verrichten, dragen ze niet bij aan de arbeid die op het object wordt verricht. Ze kunnen eenvoudigweg worden genegeerd bij de berekening van de eerste methode. Bij de tweede methode moeten ze echter eerst in aanmerking worden genomen bij het berekenen van de nettokrachtvector, en pas dan wordt hun bijdrage als nul beschouwd. Als onderling tegengestelde krachten op het massamiddelpunt van het object inwerken, dragen ze bij de eerste methode bij aan verschillend positief en negatief werk. Door de algebraïsche sommatie blijkt de totale arbeid die aan het object wordt verricht positief of negatief te zijn, afhankelijk van welke van de krachten groter in omvang is. Bij de tweede methode wordt eerst de netto kracht verkregen en wordt bepaald dat deze ofwel langs of tegengesteld aan de netto verplaatsing werkt. Vervolgens wordt de arbeid verkregen en wordt bepaald of deze positief of negatief is, afhankelijk van de hoek ten opzichte van de verplaatsing.

Work-Energy Along Curved Paths

The work-energy theorem can be applied to motion along a curved path. A curved path can be treated as many tiny straight paths added together.
