Consider a two-wire single-phase system providing electricity to homes and a three-wire balanced three-phase system powering a factory with heavy machinery.
Both systems use wires of the same material and length with resistive loads and have the same line voltage and absorbed power.
In the single-phase system, the current equals the ratio of the absorbed power to the line voltage, with the power loss proportional to the square of the absorbed power divided by the square of the line voltage.
For the three-phase system, the current is divided into three wires, and the total power loss is calculated differently.
In the ratio of the power losses of the two systems, resistances are substituted in terms of the wire radii.
If power loss is equal in both systems, the wire&#39;s radius in the single-phase system is twice that of the three-phase system.
Comparing the material required for the two systems, the single-phase system uses 33% more material than the three-phase system.
So, for the same power output, a three-phase system substantially minimizes material consumption, enhancing its power distribution efficiency.

In dit systeem wordt de stroom verdeeld over de drie draden, waardoor de stroom in elke draad wordt verminderd in vergelijking met een enkelfasig systeem met hetzelfde vermogensniveau. Uitgaande van dezelfde stroom en weerstand in elke fase, is het totale vermogensverlies de som van de verliezen in elke fase.
  Draadgrootte en materiaalverbruik:
Bij het vergelijken van draadgroottes voor een gelijk vermogensverlies in beide systemen, moet het dwarsdoorsnedeoppervlak van de draden in een eenfasig systeem groter zijn dan dat in een driefasig systeem om de verhoogde stroom te kunnen dragen zonder het vermogensverlies te vergroten. Power Distribution in Three-phase and Single Phase Circuits

Single-phase and three-phase circuits distribute electrical power in different ways. Single-phase power is common in homes, while balanced three-phase power is widely used in industrial settings with heavy machinery. Both systems deliver energy, but their current flow and wire needs are not the same.

A single-phase circuit usually uses a two-wire system. The current depends on the power absorbed by the load and the line voltage. Because wire loss from resistance follows the square of the current, higher current can increase power loss in the wires.

A balanced three-phase system spreads the current across three wires. This lowers the current in each wire compared with a single-phase system delivering the same power. If the current and resistance in each phase are the same, the total power loss is the sum of the loss in each phase.

Wire size also changes between the two systems. To keep equal power loss, the single-phase system needs wires with a cross-sectional area twice that of each phase wire in the three-phase system. That means single-phase wiring uses about 33% more conducting material for the same power load.
