Directional relays, designed for unidirectional fault currents, improve power system safety and efficiency.
On power lines with a directional relay, faults to the right of the current transformer cause the fault current to lag the bus voltage by nearly 90 degrees, termed the forward direction. Conversely, left-side faults result in the fault current leading the bus voltage by almost 90 degrees, termed the reverse direction
A directional relay uses reference voltage and current inputs to define its trip and block regions based on the angle between the current and voltage.
In series with an overcurrent relay, the directional relay energizes the breaker trip coil only when the current transformer&#39;s secondary current exceeds the overcurrent relay pickup value and is in the forward-tripping direction.
Operating like a watt-hour meter, electromechanical directional relays use voltage and current coils and a rotating disc element.
Forward-direction faults create maximum positive torque on the rotating disc, closing relay contacts, while reverse faults generate maximum negative torque, restrained by mechanical stops.
For two-source systems, directional relays can overcome coordination challenges, ensuring uninterrupted service to loads during faults.

Richtingsrelais, essentieel voor het beheer van eendirectionele foutstromen, verbeteren de veiligheid en efficiëntie van energiesystemen. Op hoogspanningslijnen die zijn uitgerust met richtingsrelais, veroorzaken fouten stroomafwaarts (rechts) van de stroomtransformator doorgaans dat de foutstroom ongeveer 90 graden achterloopt op de busspanning, bekend als de voorwaartse richting. Daarentegen kunnen stroomopwaarts (linkerzijde) fouten ertoe leiden dat de foutstroom bijna 90 graden voorloopt op de busspanning, de zogenaamde achterwaartse richting. De werkelijke faseverschuiving is echter afhankelijk van de systeemimpedantie en specifieke foutomstandigheden.

Richtingsrelais gebruiken referentiespanning en stroomingangen om hun trip- en blokkadegebieden te definiëren op basis van de hoek tussen de stroom en de spanning. Normaal gesproken wordt de referentiespanning van de bus of de lijn-naar-aarde-spanning genomen en wordt de stroom van de stroomtransformator (CT) gehaald. Wanneer gekoppeld aan een overstroomrelais, activeert het richtingsrelais de tripspoel van de schakelaar alleen als de secundaire stroom van de CT de opnamewaarde van het overstroomrelais overschrijdt en is uitgelijnd met de voorwaartse triprichting.

Elektromechanische richtingrelais functioneren op een vergelijkbare manier als watt-uurmeters. Ze bevatten spannings- en stroomspoelen samen met een roterend schijfelement. Voorwaartse richtingsfouten produceren maximaal positief koppel op de roterende schijf, waardoor de relaiscontacten sluiten. Achterwaartsefouten genereren daarentegen maximaal negatief koppel, dat wordt beperkt door mechanische stops.

In tweebron systemen pakken richtingrelais coördinatie-uitdagingen aan, en zorgen ze voor continue service aan ladingen tijdens storingen. Door nauwkeurig onderscheid te maken tussen voorwaartse en achterwaartse storingsomstandigheden, maken richtingrelais nauwkeurige en betrouwbare isolatie van storingen mogelijk, waardoor de stabiliteit van het systeem behouden blijft en verstoringen tot een minimum worden beperkt. Moderne digitale richtingrelais bieden geavanceerde functies zoals zelfbewaking, communicatiemogelijkheden en nauwkeurige tijdsaanpassingen, waardoor de betrouwbaarheid en effectiviteit van de bescherming van het energiesysteem verder worden verbeterd.

Directional relays help protect power systems by telling forward faults from reverse faults. They are used when fault current flows mainly in one direction on a line. This makes the relay useful for safe and efficient fault clearing.

On a protected line, a fault downstream, or to the right of the current transformer, usually makes the fault current lag the bus voltage by about 90 degrees. This is called the forward direction. A fault upstream, or to the left, may make the fault current lead the bus voltage by nearly 90 degrees. That is the reverse direction. The exact phase shift can change with system impedance and fault conditions.

These relays compare a reference voltage and a current input to set trip and block zones. The reference voltage is often taken from the bus or from line-to-ground voltage. The current comes from the current transformer, or CT. When a directional relay works with an overcurrent relay, the breaker trip coil operates only if the CT secondary current passes the pickup value and points in the forward-tripping direction.

Electromechanical directional relays work much like watt-hour meters. They use voltage coils, current coils, and a rotating disc. Forward faults create maximum positive torque, which closes the relay contacts. Reverse faults create maximum negative torque, and mechanical stops restrain the disc.

Directional relays are especially important in two-source systems, where coordination can be difficult. They help keep loads in service during faults by isolating only the faulted section. By separating forward from reverse fault conditions, these relays support stable and reliable power system protection. Modern digital directional relays add self-monitoring, communication features, and precise timing adjustments.
