The size distribution curve of cement indicates its fineness by showing the proportion of particles of varying sizes. The curve rises steeply, indicating a significant portion of fine particles. Around 90 percent of the cement particles are smaller than 2.36 mils.
Hydration of cement initiates at the surface of the cement particles. The finer the cement, the greater the surface area, leading to faster hydration and strength development.
The fineness of cement is the total surface area of cement particles per unit weight of the cement.
The Blaine air permeability test is commonly used to determine the specific surface area of cement.
For this, cement is packed in a cell at a specific density, and a partial vacuum is created, causing a definite volume of air to be drawn through the cement bed. The time taken for this is measured, and the specific surface area of cement is calculated.
Also, dry sieving a definite mass of cement through a 45-micron sieve and measuring the weight of residue retained on the sieve gives the fineness of the cement.

Cement particle size changes how cement behaves in concrete. Finer cement has more surface area, so hydration starts faster at the particle surface. This affects the rate of hardening and also influences workability, gypsum requirement, and long-term behavior.

Cement fineness is usually described by its specific surface area. This is the total surface area of cement particles per unit mass, and it is often measured in square meters per kilogram. Several methods can be used to determine it, depending on the test setup.

Some methods measure the surface area directly. Sedimentation and elutriation use Stokes' law to calculate the terminal velocity of spherical particles in a fluid. The Wagner turbidimeter is another direct approach. It estimates particle concentration in a suspension and uses light transmission to measure particle surface area.

Other methods use air flow through a cement bed. The Lea and Nurse method measures the pressure drop of air and links it to bed permeability, which gives the specific surface area indirectly. The Blaine method measures how long a known volume of air takes to pass through the cement bed at a constant rate. That time is then used to calculate specific surface area.
