Concrete should be placed close to its final position in uniform horizontal layers.
After laying, the concrete layer is fully compacted to expel the entrapped air, and the next layer is laid above it while still in a plastic state to form a monolithic structure.
For horizontal or sloping surfaces, concrete is placed vertically against the existing layer. Forms are filled at a minimum rate of 6 feet per hour for a consistent finish on vertical surfaces.
Traditionally, concrete is placed using a chute, buggy, pipe, or conveyor belt.
Specialized methods, such as tremie concreting, use a smooth, vertical pipe with water-tight joints to place highly workable concrete in deep forms or underwater.
The concrete within the pipe flows under gravity as it is gradually lifted, ensuring its end stays submerged in concrete, preventing water intrusion.
Another specialized method for continuously placing and compacting low-workable concrete is the slip-forming technique, using forms that can be advanced horizontally or vertically at a steady rate once the concrete poured has been set.

Specifieke situaties kunnen echter geavanceerde technieken vereisen. Tremie-betonneren, geschikt voor diepe en onderwater plaatsingen, omvat een verticale buis met waterdichte afdichtingen die beton door zwaartekracht laten stromen. Terwijl het beton wordt geplaatst, wordt de buis opgetild terwijl het uiteinde ondergedompeld blijft in het beton, waardoor er geen water kan binnendringen. Daarentegen wordt de slip forming-techniek gebruikt voor het continu plaatsen en verdichten van beton in verticale structuren. Placing Concrete

Concrete placement methods focus on keeping the mix in a uniform shape and position. The concrete is placed as close as possible to its final location to reduce segregation, which is the separation of ingredients. It is then fully compacted to remove trapped air. The next layer is added while the layer below is still plastic, or soft enough to shape.

The rate of placing and compacting concrete is kept equal. Concrete is laid in uniform layers, and hand shoveling is avoided. Moving concrete with poker vibrators is also avoided. In vertical forms, long delays can cause cold joints, which are weak lines where fresh concrete does not bond well with older concrete.

Placement also changes with the shape of the structure. In deep sections, concrete should not strike the formwork or reinforcement. On inclined surfaces, concrete is placed in vertical planes against the previous layer. Common placement methods include chutes, buggies, conveyor belts, and pumping concrete through pipes.

Some conditions need special techniques. Tremie concreting is used for deep and underwater placement. It uses a vertical pipe with water-tight seals so concrete flows by gravity. As concrete is placed, the pipe is lifted, but its end stays buried in the concrete to keep water out. Slip-forming is used for continuous placement and compaction in vertical structures. The forms move steadily upward as the concrete sets, which allows rapid construction.
