Finding where a function reaches its highest or lowest values helps describe its overall behavior. Identifying these values is like finding peaks and valleys along a hiking trail.A function may reach these values at numbers where its derivative is zero or undefined. These numbers are called critical numbers&#8212;numbers in the domain where the derivative is zero or undefined.According to Fermat's Theorem, if a function has a local maximum or minimum at a number and the derivative exists there, then the derivative must be zero.This means that local extrema always appear at critical numbers, although not every critical number corresponds to an extremum.Some functions have sharp corners where the derivative is undefined, yet a local extremum can still be present.To find the absolute highest or lowest values over a closed interval, the Closed Interval Method is used. This involves three steps: identify critical numbers in the open interval, evaluate the function at those numbers, and also at the endpoints. The largest and smallest of these results give the absolute maximum and minimum.

Inzicht in de maximale en minimale waarden van een functie is essentieel voor het analyseren van het algehele gedrag ervan. Deze waarden, die vaak worden aangeduid als extrema, bieden inzicht in hoe een functie zich over het domein gedraagt. In wiskundige termen kunnen extrema lokaal zijn &#x2014; die pieken en dalen binnen een beperkt gebied weergeven &#x2014; of absoluut, waarmee de hoogste of laagste waarden over een volledig interval worden bedoeld.
De extrema van een functie treden op bij kritische getallen. Dit zijn waarden in het domein waarvoor de afgeleide gelijk is aan nul of niet bestaat. Volgens de stelling van Fermat geldt dat, indien een functie een lokaal extremum bezit op een punt en daar differentieerbaar is, de afgeleide op dat punt nul moet zijn. Belangrijk is tevens dat kritische getallen ook punten omvatten waarvoor de afgeleide ongedefinieerd is. Dergelijke situaties doen zich vaak voor bij functies met scherpe hoeken of cuspiden, zoals de absolute-waardefunctie, waarbij klassieke differentieerbaarheid ontbreekt, maar desalniettemin een lokaal maximum of minimum aanwezig kan zijn.
Om de absolute extrema van een functie op een gesloten interval [a, b] te bepalen, wordt de geslotenintervalmethode toegepast. Deze procedure bestaat uit drie stappen:

Absolute extrema on a closed interval are found by checking critical numbers and the endpoints. A function’s maximum and minimum values help describe its overall behavior across its domain. These values are called extrema, and they can be local or absolute.

Local extrema are peaks and valleys in a limited region. Absolute extrema are the highest or lowest points on the entire interval. Critical numbers are the domain values where the derivative is zero or does not exist. According to Fermat’s Theorem, if a function has a local extremum at a point where it is differentiable, then the derivative at that point must be zero.

A critical number does not always mean there is a local extremum. Some critical numbers mark inflection points or flat regions instead. Critical numbers also include points where the derivative is undefined. This can happen at sharp corners or cusps, such as on an absolute value function, where a local maximum or minimum may still occur.

The Closed Interval Method is used to find absolute extrema on an interval written as [a, b]. First, identify all critical numbers in the open interval (a, b). Next, evaluate the function at those critical numbers. Then evaluate the function at the endpoints a and b.

After all of these values are found, compare them. The greatest value is the absolute maximum, and the least value is the absolute minimum on the interval. This method makes sure every possible extremal point is checked, giving a complete picture of the function’s behavior on a closed interval.
